Nice V8 project

Post by Jeroen »

OK here's some info and a few pics of a nice E21 V8 conversion.
No BMW V8 as you can see, this sweet 4 litre was taken from a Lexus.

Some details:
Front brakes: custom made hubs with 540i disks, willwood racing callipers, m5 replica wheels (17x8")
Rear end: modified rear subframe to carry Nissan Skyline GTS-25T diff (4.3:1 LSD), custom made axles
and all painted silver. custom rear hubs with 528i disks, Toyota Levin callipers (for simple handbrake setup).
Exhaust: twin 2.5" system with mandrel bends and twin resonators into 3" straight through muffler mounted
where fuel tank was, to large stainless tip out left side of car through modified sill (for more ground clearance).

Especially like the reinforcements literally made round the diff!

Please note that this car is still under construction and the pics are made while test fitting the engine...
hope to be able to keep you guys posted... dam curious how this project will end!

Looks very cool... I've often been curious about the 4.0L Toyota engines because they are very cheap to get in OZ (especially compared with a BMW V8 at around $1500AUD) and quite powerful... I'd always considered the swap into an e28 as they are a bit roomier under the bonnet, but the e21 doesn't look too bad.

hi
this is my car. i emailed the pics to jeroen, then thought i may as well join the forum if my cars gonna be on it.
i apologise to the purists out there who dont agree to a japanese driveline in a bmw. in New Zealand bmw v8's are very hard to come by and start at about $5000 for a 3.5 litre, so iv got the lexus v8 for a fifth of that. they're all alloy, have stock forged steel cranks, 6 bolt main bearings, 32 valves and are renouned for being indestructable.
i had it dynoed the other day, and its putting out over 181kw at the wheels at only 5200rpm, and 360Nm torque. it should be good for 12s down the quarter, which is fast enough for me. once funds are available, i will be installing a vortech supercharger and intercooler for a bit more go.
iv spent about 2-3 hundred hours detailing, modifying and polishing the engine, but havnt finished the body yet so you'll have to wait to see that.
i will endeaver to post updates and answer questions you may have.
thanks

Amazing! I'm all for sacrilege, when it works for the project parts could come from a Zastava as far as I'm concerned... The silver engine bay looks great too, especially together with a non-silver body. Do you plan to keep it red/silver? I would!!

Great motor these, another toyota motor that will comfortably hold 1000+hp with factory internals.

Good to see the square has been thought out of, really keen to see the finished product.

thanks everyone for your comments.
the reason i painted the engine bay silver was to match the motor, and i havnt decided on a body colour yet. im almost finished doing shaved handles, badges, petrol filler flap and side strips. iv done custom headlights, tail lights, indicators aswell.
colour wise i was thinking a black candy, possibly.

A man after my own heart! I had a friend talk of you (?)going down teh strip with an open center, was it not strong enough? And i guess ill ask, is it difficult to retrofit the japanese diff in??
I'm guessing the sump sits infont of the x-member?
Love the idea, Damn good work!
thought of rover 4.6hse my  self.

hi
there is a 1uz (lexus v8) powered e21 in australia, so it might have been that guy your friend was talking about. my car has not been driven yet. it is almost 'finished' after three years. it was standard when i started. the diff was very hard to mount. the motor and gearbox took less work. if i did it again id put a 7 series diff in it.
yes, the sump is a front mount. the motors came out with front, centre and rear sumps. mine is off a toyota celsior (lexus ls400) so has the front sump. no sump mods needed. it fits nicely over the front of the crossmember.
cheers

yeah that car is crazy. wish i had one. (www.f40.co.nz)
the norm over here is mitsi lancer evos, subaru wrx's, nissan gtr's, etc, with a few people doing e30's, but wheels and sounds is about it, and maybe the occasional rotary bmw conversion. e21's are very rare, i only see one a month on average. i have seen one modified (buick 3.8 v6 engine swap). most people dont even know mines a bmw, except for the logo on the wheels. thats how i like it. it looks good, will go hard, and be the only one like it.

hi, and thanks. im not sure what you mean by the stupid brace thing, but you cant see a booster because there isn't one. im running a balance bar pedal box and huge disks, so dont really need or want a booster. i dont think one would fit in the engine bay anyway. i have also run all the new brake lines through the car and outside the engine bay to keep with the de-loomed look.
