Hi all,
I'm currently trying to purchase a 1984 Hartge H23 engine to convert into my 82 e21 323i and just have a few questions i'm hoping people can help me with..
My current research seems to show the original conversion included a camshaft, manifold, cam cover and modifications to the cylinder head, but the block remains the factory e30 323i block- is this correct?
Does the cylinder head, cam cover or engine block have any specific serial / identification numbers which would prove the parts are genuine Hartge? I'm pretty sure the manifold has a tac welded number and Hartge name on there. Obviously i want to be 100% sure the engine / parts are genuine Hartge before committing to buy, as i know there wasn't many engines and the parts are quite rare
The engine will come with a e30 spec wiring loom and ignition/ Ljetronic which should aid in mating the engine to my e21.
I'm toying with the idea of changing the Hartge parts from the e30 engine onto my current e21 model, and changing the gearbox from the auto which it is currently to a manual, or changing the whole engine and gearbox into my car.
Any help or advice would be appreciated! Thanks in advance,
Ash

Re: Hartge H23 engine identification / conversion

The engine block remains standard. If its an e30 block it should have the following code stampt 23 6 EB
The head should have a hartge stamp and serial nr at the intake side between cil 1 and 2 above the thermostat housing.
On my e21 hartge I had nr 0688
The camshaft should have the gradations marked at the rear side against the bulkhead but that you cannot see unless you dismantle the head.
Hope this helps
