Change twin H1 headlights to Single H4 + spots

Post by Angus McQueen »

I do endurance rallies in my 323i baur (#4573) and on the night stages it is too dark with the standard set up of 4 headlights. the full beam setting is not good enough with the two outside lights remaining in dipped mode. So I have decided to replace them with two H4 head lights from a 318 and then add two spot lights. This way when the full beam is on I will have four lights on full beam.
Does anyone have any tips as to the wiring needed to make such a change or any experiences of doing the same?
Many thanks in advance

Hi Angus, I think its possible to get higher wattage H1 bulbs, part number 481 type are 100w which will be significantly brighter than the standard 55w 448 type youre probably using at mo.
This may save a lot of changes for you, hope this useful to know.

Enough options for more light indeed, enough 'Rally' marked H1 bulbs around of 80-100W from Osram, Philips and the likes. Competition use only, not for use on public roads. Must say I have them in my road E21 for years already. Only thing is that they do get hotter so don't use them in a traffic jam haha.
