Hey all
I’m having a really hard time starting my 323i, and am nearly at the end of my wits, it’s just starting as it should do.
Having refitted it in the car and connecting all the electrical and hose connections correctly, I start it but it seems like it’s choking and doesn’t start until I remove the breather hose from the rocket cover which is also releasing a lot pressure and gas from the head.
If I try to startwith the pipe disconnected it will fire up after 10-seconds of turning and trying to fire, really sounds like it’s having breathing/ vacuum issues. It’s becoming a nightmare and I just want it sorted, am eager to drive it this summer after 12years of being parked in the garage being restored.
Im wondering if either the warm up regulator and cold start valve could cause these issues, as I haven’t checked these. I have replaced the air slide valve with a W & N unit (maybe this is causing an issue?) it’s feels like the vacuum system pressure isn’t operating as required, is there a component which controls this specifically?
Is there anyone with good knowledge or experience of the K jet system here that can assist a me in solving the problem?
Would really appreciate any help, running out of ideas on what’s causing this issue. I’m willing to pay to get this issue resolved from a specialist if anyone knows of someone near London.
Thanks in advance for any input guys

Re: start issues after 5years rebuild
Trouble I encountered was the fueldistributor having the plunger stuck. Hence it couldnt adjust to the trottle, so it gave the same anount of fuel al the time. Cousing the engine to choke or rev up like hell, depending on accelerator.
Re: start issues after 5years rebuild
That sounds like the culprit as it chokes for sometime before it starts and then revs high and low before dying out. How did you resolve it? Was any other component from the k jet causing any issues? I suspect a lot of faults are being caused due to the fact I had the engine out for 3 years during the fully body restoration, so now seems like the sensitive injection system tolerances are messed around with..
Thanks for putting me in the right direction, grateful!

Number 2 gave me crap. Got the plunger stuck. But that is often stuck by itselve, should go in when pushed in, and comes out, slowly. My guess is the airflowbox that is underneath the distributer or the distributer itselve. But ofcourse, I am guessing based on your description form behind my laptop ..
Re: start issues after 5years rebuild
Hey guys
So just spent past 5hrs crammed under the 323 to remove the sump pan found that the oil over pressure relief valve was jammed shut, and not allowing oil to circulate correctly. What would be the obvious signs of a blocked oil system? I had oil leaking from the top of the sump vent pipe and oil burn smoke coming from the rocket cover.
Made a mistake during the rebuild, I fitted a genuine brand new oil pump but didn’t think the valve needed to.
Thanks for any replies

Well, first of all, congrats on solving the issue. So something was blocked, after all. Really glad you managed to solve it.
The tell signs were exactly as I would expect, oil from various spots were it not should leak.
