I’ve got it exactly how I want it for the time being. I got the BBS alloys on yesterday and the wooden steering wheel went on at the weekend 8-)

Mega chuffed with it and it's turned out better than imagined. Next step is the 2002/318i M10 engine conversion in the summer ;)

And and a random cool moth shot I found yesterday morning on the ol' steels...

Not updated this for a while... probably because it's simply been left as it is and it's now clocked up thousands of miles. I had planned to combine a 2002 engine and an early e30 318i engine to create a 2L fuel injection beast, I even picked the engines up and they're sitting in the workshop. However as always plans change, this turned up at a price I couldn't refuse...

318is

The crap exterior hides what I'm after

Fingers crossed this will save me time and money since it's more powerful than the previous planned engine and it should have the ballpark bhp I want straight from the box. The timing chain needs doing though. I will also be to uprating the front brakes to the vented 323i (or volvo) disc brake setup, polybush the car all round and relocate the battery to the boot.

Removing the IS engine.
Image

The old man demonstrates a very easy way of moving the engine...
Image

Removed the engine out of the E21, single handedly which I was quite impressed with! Gunk and a pressure washer made short work of the engine bay
Image

Engineless :(
Image

Unfortunately all the timing parts needs to be replaced, as well as some deep internal gaskets which is a major pain. My mate came over and lent me a greatly appreciated hand and showed me how to remove a seized crank bolt 8-) Cool photo
Image

I finally got myself a welder, and I've had a bit of practice so it was finally time to take the leap and weld the car myself! Engine bay grot chopped
Image

Just the over side of that hole the chassis needed grot chopped out
Image

As a complete novice who really does suck, this was the end result. This actually shows 3 seperate holes I've filled!
Image

The reason the holes existed were due to brake pipe supports going rotten, so I decided to do my very first fabrication, remaking the support.
Image

Pleased with the end result
Image

Welded in. My helmets a bit dark so one of the welds is WAY out!
Image

Me on the job 8-)

If some of it doesn't make sense, I've copied and pasted from my Retro-Rides thread.

Gameover, I ran out of time >:(. I'm back at uni meaning the next time I'll be working on this car is June next year! RR'08 is my next deadline.

Here's the last photos for a while.

The drivers wheel arch really rotted out.

All I could do is just slap hammerite everywhere, especially where I've left holes still.

Now it sits abandoned, I had an idea with the grill also.

Wish I had your barn to keep my car collection in!

I assume you are using the 318is gearbox, what are you going to do about the speedo? Or are you transplanting the is dash etc as well?

Speedos are last of my concerns for now. I plan to use a bike speedo which will be accurate enough, or a cheap digital dashboard similiar to what kit cars use.

hello mate :)
i love black cars, i like black/chrome together always works well.
anyway what happened to the ATS wheels? didnt fit?
i was hoping to see a pic of it on them, do you still have them?
i like the idea with the grille, i guess you were making a cold air feed? i need to do this with mine really, my carbs are getting no cold air.
so let me know what happened with the wheels

I knew the ATS would need spacers at the front, but they also needed spacers at the back. I decided to cut my losses and sell them. I'm also upgrading to volvo 4 pot calipers on the front and I don't think 13" alloys fit because of the bigger calipers. Luckily I picked up a set of 15" BBS which fit to my car with no spacers. I can let you know someone that has 15" wheels, but they aren't cheap. I've seen the BBS wheels like mine come up every now and again.

I've decided that the grille doesn't look good, so I'm going back to a full single grill!

If you need spares, I have two whole spares cars, problem is I'm no where near Plymouth and I'm not with the car until late December.
