At least in Holland it is relatively easy through a friend with the police or with an insurance firm to find out where the car belongs. In the past, several cars are believed to be stolen after some positive presentations on the internet, even from some people close to me. That's why people choose not to disclose on the web as far as possible. Can't prevent completely since the cars are used on the road, but at least try to minimize exposure.

Living on IOM I keep forgetting that there is car crime about elsewhere!

- we live in a fairly crime free bubble over here- I often forget to lock the front door for eg and keys are usually kept on the dashboard!
someone did steal a car here once-- it turned up on the beach and then the owner remembered who had taken it (for a bet)
