323i 82- Norway.

Post by Kristoffer »

Hi guys. I have blasted some through the side and seen very many nice cars, and been inspired to make my thread.

History.
The car is an original Norwegian-bought car from 1982. It was originally delivered with automatic gearbox and was silver gray. The interior was original blue.
In the mid 90's, the car was restored. Then the car was painted in Dolphin Gray and rebuilt into 4-speed manual.
The car has no longer the original bosch K-tronic injection, but an L-tronic from a 323i e30. But I want to go back. The interior is today bright and needs care. I currently have woolen seat covers made by a Norwegian company in the 80's.

I sold the car in 2018, but fortunately I got it back soon. after that I was motivated to get the car back to the stand it deserves.

dampers, brakes, gears, diffusers and linings on the car are in good condition, while lacquer, engine and interior need an update.

Otherwise, the car is in medium good condition. Unfortunately, I have got rust in the luggage compartment, and it has also appeared on the roof as well as elsewhere.

I intend to do something about this, and therefore think about making a thread on this process going forward. Something is all done this summer but the rest is done continuously as time goes on.

Hope you enjoy the thread and gladly come with suggestions

hope the pictures will be visible. Thanks and have a nice day.

Hi Kristoffer! Welcome here and thanks for the extensive introduction! Good plans and we'd love to see them evolve. And mind you, there are several extensive restoration threads here (like the one from previous poster uwbuurman) that mey be very useful. And of course we will try to support you as much as possible! Enjoy and good luck with the project!

I have been fortunate enough to get hold of a couple of recaro chairs. These are unfortunately very worn and need both new pillows and new ones.
They should actually be blue but have faded and obtained an approximate green color.

They will hopefully get a rehabilitation during August.

They also lack plastic covers and height adjustment wheel. But it looks like I'm able to get the most parts from ebay and at www.koed.no

Some of the parts are out of production, but I found one on ebay as 3d printed a bracket i was missing.

Here is the link if some of the guys also is missing this pice.

thanks Jeroen. Seeing there is a lot to learn by previous threads. I have the feeling that there is a high level of knowledge among many of the users in here.

:thumbsup

Tried a similar set from a specialized company but I wasn't too happy out the workmanship, color or durability. I'm afraid most is cheap Chinese stuff even though for this price tag you should be able to expect something better, but on eBay price definitely is no guarantee.

I now have plans for an overhaul on cylinderhead. I plan to change exhaust and intake valves. Is there anything else you recommend to change at once?

From my experience having been through this twice I'd say get the head checked for cracks as the 200 castings are notorious, I had mine checked and still had a problem, maybe it cracked as I torqued it down?

The camshaft, rockers and rocker shafts are all worth a look and of course change the valve stem oil seals.

Why are you replacing the valves?

I have bought valves, but not sure if I should replace them. I'll hand it in to a specialist workshop to see if everything is tight and check for cracks

ImageI came across a 5 step gearbox on eBay. have bought this one and are now waiting for it to come. today i have a 4 speed gearbox so there will probably be some rebuilding of the drive shaft considering the length of the gearbox.

does anyone know where i can get the switch mechanism?

You mean the shiftplate? That holds the shifter? That will be hard to find without a box. Not 100% sure, but I think that you can also cut of the plate from the 4box. To the next two holes. Together with the long 5speed that must work.

The drive shaft can be cut to size indeed. Make sure to balance it after.
