carbon fibre airbox fitted!

Post by Jeroen »

OK.. always been a fan of these CF airboxes because of their sound. Love intake noise much more than exhaust noise... had the same with my Samba Rally that was equipped with two double Weber sidedraft carbs. Most of the time I drove these open as well.

On the other hand... I'm not planning to convert to Alpha-N and somehow for a Q car like the 320iS fourdoor I think that's too much anyway.

But I finally found a trustworthy guy that could offer me a cf airbox that was exactly the shape of the original accumulator so that should be a straight swap. 99% straight swap as the hole for the intake trumpets was slighty too wide so I chose to replace the original o-ring by a thin layer of rubber sealant.

Test driving...
At startup... quiet
During warmup at low revs... just a slight, decent and remote noise
Low revs but stepping on the accelerator a bit more... a nice and still decent noise up to abt 4500 rpm
Above 4500 rpm there's the noise we want. For people watching in the street it's pretty impressive. Inside you hear somewhat of a DTM noise  but still not that loud and definitely not as loud as the more open systems fitted on Alpha-N equipped cars. For me this is all I wanted, just the right amount of noise! No soundfile, maybe later.

But here's some pics...

Jeroen, looks lovely!! was thinking of going the same route myself, but decided to save up for the CF airbox and Alpha-N.

Do you notice any improvements? Other than the sound, I would not have thought there would be any improvement, apart from maybe not heating up as much as the metal plenum therefore cooler air!?

Anyway looks lovely.

Nope, didn't notice any improvements in performance but didn't expect any either.. did this just for the sound.. more sporty but still decent as long as you keep the revs done -which is hard in a S14 hahaha-

Additional advantage... weight reduction!

It does look very good, now doesn't it? I'm just dying to hear the soundeffect at high rpms.

Indeed, I wouldn't expect any improvements performance wise, since the CF intake plenum is a replica of the standard plenum. However, I would think that the featherweight CF plenum reduces the stress on the intake-gaskets, which must be a good thing.

I just wish I had one... oh wait, there is one on my shelf waiting for installation!

I think I will not be doing any kicking unless that idiot decides not to install it...

Done!! The lady also greeted you :)
Do you know that this morning, at 6 o'clock, I exported from the UK this one?
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 4593154361

It was funny at the airport, the police woman screaming at the girl at the x-ray pc
CAAAR PAAARTS HEREEEEEEEE

then the girl at the policeman at the metal detector:
CAAAR PAAARTS HEREEEEEEEEEEEE

I think I could export a bomb... nobody looked at it...
And I wasted time in printing the ebay webpage in English and Italian, plus the printing of the ETK diagram

You'll definitely need this option to go with your new airbox
