E21 performance parts & upgrades - my experience
& opinion
|
Lowering springs |
Eibach.
Cheap springs do lower but do not always make roadholding
better. Some other brands available that give reasonable quality. No
experience with those but the Eibachs are out of
production! |
|
Shock absorbers |
Bilstein,
Sachs or Boge - all German quality |
|
Tower braces |
Tremendous improvement in cornering and overall ride with front tower
brace, at low cost. On fast roads with deep tracks every E21 tends to search
for it's own direction. That's completely gone with a good front tower strut
brace! Improve Tuning
supplies them! Cornering and especially accelerating from corners improves with a
rear tower brace |
|
Stabilizers |
Replace rubber seals on front and rear with new or harder ones |
|
Brakes - discs |
Replacing discs by grooved Até Power Discs or
even grooved and drilled discs like Derok improves
braking |
|
Exhaust |
I don't like the sound of a sports exhaust system on a 323i, but a
spaghetti-style exhaust manifold improves overall torque and doesn't add
excessive noise |
|
Air intake |
Apply sports filter like K&N |
|
Spark plugs |
Bosch (amongst others) have new spark plugs with 4 leads: they sparkle
everytime! |

Still available from your local dealer: the original 5.5x13 wheels Larger wheels: Alpina, see my Alpina
parts page E21's are known for being difficult on the subject of wheels. If
you're not sure, try to fit before you buy. The front brake caliper units tend to sit in the way. Most important is
the ET value. For 13" rims it should be about ET 18, for 15" alloys
about ET 12. |
