Some updates in the blog and writing up the next installment: taking out the motor and verifying whether it's a real Alpina engine.....

Congrats on having the real deal. And yes, the engine should go back. That's how it is meant to be.

Nice work on the website!

Info I gathered is that the 3-xxxx numbers were only used if one ordered a full spec C1. But in most cases people bought a part of the package and then they did not get the C1 plaque, but a 320-xxxx plaque. So I do believe it is genuine, or at least the plaque is.

What I found out too, is that Alpina only kept records on their B6 conversions. On these models you get all the details.

Interesting stuff! Not that I doubt you -- I have no reason to -- but curious where you heard this? I know the car is a genuine Alpina, but the plaque puzzles me. This information could solve that puzzle.

So, if it was partial what sort of equipment did it not have? Was there a correlation to whether built by Alpina or dealer? Any other observations?

Yikes.....i´m on the same boat with a C1 2.3.

I bought it two years ago, hoping it was a real alpina c1 2.3, and it was not expensive, the history was that the guy who sold it to me in Tucson AZ. , had had it for many years, and sold it to another guy in phoenix AZ, but had him promisse that if he was ever to sell it, that he would re-buy it. the Phoenix guy, started a restoration with his son, and they never got close to anything, but some dissasembly....., and some years later sold it back in pieces to the guy in Tucson AZ.

I knwe the story because I know the guy in Phoenix, that he sells me parts for a ferrari, ....anyway, I get a call from Tucson, asking me if I was interested, that he was not going to put the car back toghether again ever, and that if I promissed to not break it appart and sell it for parts, that he would sell it to me, he even had a copy of the original sales invoice, where it says BMW 323 C1 2.3, along with all the list of alpina parts.

I bought it on site, mostly broken down, but heck , it was a great deal.....although , I had my doubts that it was a real Alpina, I bought it, but left it in his shop ( the Tucson guy is a Ferrari mechanic ), so I headed back home in Mexico city, I called KSK distributing ( the current Alpina distributor for the US ) , and gave them my vin number, and they told me it was NOT an alpina car, that the vin number was not an alpina vin, I was very sad, but thought, well if it isnt a real Alpina then I´ll sell it for parts. It did not have a dash plaque at all !!

Just like you, I was´nt satisfied with the answer, and it didn´t make sense to have the original invoice, and everything in the car was listed on it, alpina seats, alpina spoilers front and back, alpina c1 motor, steering wheel, shift knob, VDO dash board , 15 in. alpina wheels, alpina decalset etc.

So I e-mailed Alpina Germany , and they said that since it was prior to 1983, that I sould check the engine number and give it to them, so I asked the Tuscon guy to give me the engine number, and like yours its a
+C1+ then seven numbers, followed by the four digit engine number, I sent it , and two weeks latter I got an e-mail back from Alpina Germany saying, your engine was manufactured here at Alpina, and the other seven numbers must be the chasis number .......Yei !!!!!!! the numbers match the car , no wonder, I would look at all the BMW vin number decoder pages, and in some, I got just bmw 323 with NO more info, and in others, there was just an error message saying the Vin number was wrong.

two weeks ago, I received the car with all the importation documents here in Mexico city, and it will sit outside my house for a couple of months before I start a restoration, I need to finish at least another one, so I can send this car to the shop for restoration, right now I´m restoring a 1984 M635, with 59,000 kilometers on it ( about 40,000 miles ) , a 1963 mercedes 300se coupe , and a 1937 mercedes 170 VA two seater cabriolet, so the shop is pretty full.

I will latter need help from you with the restoration , so I hope you can help me the with some info and photos of certain parts of the car, since mine is has some assembly required haha.... , and good luck with your amazing proyect.

these are rare cars, and I don´t know if they will ever be collectible or not, if set up right, I´m sure they are a blast to drive around in .

Wow, impressive story, the right stuff after all! And with the engine number matching and the C1 cast into it as well, it sounds like it is one of the rare few C1's built in Buchloe even! Total production numbers are not clear I believe as they only really kept track of the B6 conversions, but I do believe full C1 conversions from Buchloe are rare, most C1's are partial (budget) conversions done at dealerships.

Prices of Alpina cars are seeing steep increases at the moment so this will be a worth while project imo. Keep us posted and preferably make a topic on it in the Owners Gallery!
