WTB: E21 323i LHD

Post by dms71 »

I live in the Northeast US and I am looking to purchase a clean (no rust) low mileage unmodified E21 323i. Will import to US or if one that is already here fits the bill that works as well.

Currently own '82 E21 320i US Spec very clean low miles that is a fair weather driver and it drives really well.

I am interested in a 323i that my mechanic and I can keep in good running condition and can enjoy driving on fair weather days as well!

Previously owned E21; E30 and E28. Thanks.

Dan

Hi Dan, what state do you call home? Just curious. With regards to your question, even in Europe a decent 323i is nowhere to be found for reasonable money. Everything is getting expensive, even running wrecks. I think that top of the market, apart from 500mls cars or other specials, is around 30k euro, over here in the Netherlands or in Germany. So 30k Euro, plus shipping, about 5k? And some other costs, in dollars a good 323i, on your driveway, will set you back an easy 40, 45k dollar.

I think you best get online, on www.mobile.de, for the German market. Or go to www.ebay-kleinanzeichen.de (but thats not in English) Just to get a feel.

If you find some cars of interest, then post them here and we will advise you.

It is a strange car. Type 2 front valance, type 2 doors, type 1 rearlights, type 1 dash, but type 2 last year only bracket on the intake manifold, suggesting newer engine... Can't be matching numbers.

20k is more than I would pay for this car. And, for all e21s goes that I recommend asking for pics of the trunk and wheelhousings behind the rearseat.

$20k+ for a mistmatched car. I see others with 150k+ miles for $30k as you were saying. Wow that's more than I was thinking. I searched far and wide in the US there are not many imported e21 323i around.

Thank you in advance for help with the search. Initially I was hoping to buy a car and have it shipped for $20k but looks like I will need to up that to $25k to purchase and ship. Let's see if we can find something. Can you provide a primer on type 1 v type 2 (I assume year(s) of production?). I see the pics of your 323i she's a beauty.

Thanks. Mine is the type 1. So difference is mainly (and I am sure I will forget some things to mention)
- front valance, 1 had plastic grilles in them, 2 has 2 black stripes
- center grille "kidney" lies further back, more tilted
- door windows slghtly larger, due to the fact that the mirrors are on the doorpanel, 2 has them liike the e28 and e30 in de windowcorner
- dashboard in 2 has more vent openings and turn switches for the heater etc. Type 1 has sliders
- rear lights in 1 have no build in fog light, so larger compartment for the brake light, but smaller rear light..
- hence to point above, type 1 has pressed circles right below the rear bumper. Thats were the optional foglight goes.

Besides this ther are differences in seatconsoles with early ones, 1 and 2 have different upholstery. There is also difference between 4 and 6 cilinders.

It is said that type 1 are a bit more rust sensitive. But after 40some years they all rust...

Just get the best one your bank will allow you to. (Or the misses, whom ever gets to you first....)

So, 25k dollar makes about 20k euro... includig shipment you wont be buying at the top of the market. No harm done there, but I think parts are even harder and more expensive to get by in the USA than overhere. My guess is that shipment will cost you about 5k. So we have this 15 -18 k budget to source you a nice 323i?

The 323i offer you found has a lot to like and some question marks ie the high mileage and multiple previous owners. I will check around some more and we will chat again thanks again for your help.

Mate, beware it is in Kilometers not miles. And 40 years old, then 200k km or 125k mls is not a lot. Nust over 3.000mls per year.

The engine is very much capable of running over 200k miles of 320k km, much more of importance is wether it is serviced on a regular basis, good quality oil and how it has been driven.

Ah I agree with you that 200k km is not a lot I had not done the conversion properly. Maintenance history is critical we use carfax in the US is there a database of vehicle maintenance in Europe? On this example how would you go about verifying maintenance history outside of a mechanical inspection? I REALLY like the look of this one the Alpina wheels are a big plus.
