URGENT HELP - Head Bolt Torque Settings

Post by NorthernRob »

Hui,

Im in the middle of reassembling my worked head.

1984 1.8i head fitting onto a 19834 1.8 M10.

AutoData gives different torque instructions for the heads,

E21 data wants me to do a 6 stage tighten including running the engine for 25 mins before final tighten
E30 data is far sinmpler.

Do i follow the E30 head inststructions as its an E30 head, or the E21 instructions as its obviopusly an E21 Block.

Thanks
Spanners are in hand as we speak.
Cheers Rob.

I'd go with whatever method is the most gradual. I have heard about the 25 minute warm-up method before and I guess it makes sense really. However, I'm no mechanic so you're better off waiting for Jason, Murran etc.

the reason for the warm up is to stretch the bolts before the final torquing. its a necessary thing to do because the head is aluminum and the block is cast. the last time i replaced a head gasket i drove for 500 miles and retorqued the bolts one final time.
