I dont know what to do for the best
Re: I dont know what to do for the best
Was interested meself but I want one to mod so you might not want me to have it.
Re: I dont know what to do for the best
To be devil's advocate...your E21 looks great, think hard on it as you might not come across one like it next time you fancy one. That coppery/bronze colour is ace.
i've been looking for my first one for a while and now and I have pretty much got it (just needs collecting) and there don't seem to be that many older ones around. I might be wrong, though, or just not looked hard enough!

Drive a Mini Cooper (the proper one) or 1275GT, a MKI Golf GTI or a 205 GTI. Nowt wrong with a good FWD and/or French car; it's when BMW try making one it all goes tits up.murran wrote:i hate to point out a flaw in your plan..... but that clio is french and the engine is driving the wrong wheels.

And that's exactly the mindset non-E21 people think of us when we explain why we like our cars. Sauce for the goose...RetroBeemer wrote:Is there such a thing?E21meister wrote: Nowt wrong with a good FWD and/or French car

Re: I dont know what to do for the best
I'm talking German & RWD as opposed to e21's specifically. There are several good reasons why the vast majority of genuine drivers / performance / sports cars are RWD.

Oh no, I'm not getting sucked into a FWD v. RWD arguement. I've owned good examples of both formats, I love them both, they both have their pros & cons. Unless you have experience of FWD drivers cars your opinion is naturally biased.
As for automotive snobbery there's enough to go round already, thanks; the sun doesn't shine out of Munich's/Stuggart's/Ingolstadt's/Zuffenhausen's backside.
EDIT: in the interests of fair play, here's a Williams being briefly hooned around by Tiff:

I also did physics and asking the front tyres to cope with steering, braking and accelerating is just plain silly. Anything over 200bhp and you've got no chance of anything more than a whole heap of understeer! Added to which, lift-off oversteer is nowhere near as much fun as a powerslide or good'ole 4 wheel drift. Again, just an opinion. I don't think it's just German performance cars that avoid FWD though is it? I wonder why that is? Italians save it for things like Alfasuds.
Re: I dont know what to do for the best
fwd was developed for three things.....
1) cheapness of production.
2) more compact town cars.
3) passenger space.

Re: I dont know what to do for the best
I agree with most of your comments but disagree with most too. I currently own both, FWD and RWD cars and I have not said one is better than the other, just that I personally (for my reasons) prefer FWD cars. Whether they were ment for cheapness/practicallity/town stuff, any car which has ever been made has had one specific reason and thats to transport people around! If you want to go sideways everywhere then fair play. My measly 1.6 M10 engine will gladly take me where I want to go but in its own pace, a whole 90 BHP. Like I said I dont own an E21 to go fast, far from it!

Re: I dont know what to do for the best
I did it the other way round. Sold my mk1 1.8 valver in anthracite to buy the E21. Great little cars.. I did a 4000 mile roadtrip round Europe in it piled high with camping gear etc. up and down mountains in the blistering heat and it didn't have a single hiccup the whole way.
If you need a new bonnet, wings or bumper for the williams I have all in the classic blue. I also have a MINT condition set of front and back seats (actual williams ones, not just the sport buckets) if you're interested.

Re: I dont know what to do for the best
Yeah yeah we know FWD is no good over 200bhp or thereabouts, that's well known. RWD came about as that was the most logical way of powering the road wheels, not for performance reasons (unless 1888 Benzs, De Dion Boutons and Panhards were being featured in EVO that I don't know about
).
The FWD format dates back as far as the Automobile itself, although the first successful FWD passenger cars didn't come about until the 1920's/1930's and they weren't really designed that way because of cost, packaging or space, more like Smart-Alec engineers wanting to show off their skills.
Same here Alan, FWD/RWD/4WD formats all have their good and bad points, I don't see the point in siding one way or another, I've heard too many FWD v RWD discussions and they've all bored the hell out of me.
