Steering column spacer

I acquired an M-sport steering wheel (off an E30 I think). It goes onto the splines ok but then my indicators will not self-cancel, unless I remove the little spacer on the column shaft itself (pictures here:)

But with the spacer removed the steering wheel doesn't seat itself properly and wobbles about on the column, not very safe!

Does anyone know where I could get hold of a slimmer one, or a friendly lathe-owner who might be able to knock one up for me?

What happens if you put the spacer on the other side of the boss?
