e21 center prop bearing

Post by nas80 »

My center prop bearing is dead.

Im trying to psych myself up for changing it this weekend - would like it to go smoothly.

Just wondering if any of you have any tips or hints? I did search but theres nothing!

I think I remember reading that lots of people had trouble with the ones from EuroCarParts, W+N etc. so probably best to go for the 'official' option?

Bollocks cos I've bought the euro car parts one.

You do have to tense them up by pulling it forwards? Maybe they didn't do that before? I'm sure there is warranty on this part. I'm going to risk it.

Yep, not too difficult indeed. Just make sure to mark the two halves before pulling apart and put back together the same way or you'll have unbalance. Gove it abt 2-3mm forward tension when fastening and you'll be fine. But while you're there, inspect the guibo disc and if you're having gearbox leaks now is the time to combine things (I personally hate to have to do things twice).

so i changed this center prop bearing at a mates garage using his ramp - most of the work was getting the custom exhaust off and that bloody nut in the middle of the u-joint!

Anyway after changing it I took the car round the block. Turned out of a junction completely sideways smoking my tyres up (that was good drift haha) in order to replicate the issue i had. That thumping noise appears to have been solved - however subsequently setting off at any speed and accelerating i had a really wierd vibration coming from under the car ...

took it back to the garage and it appears that I had ripped a nice big tear in my crappy Euro Car Parts "lemforder" guibo and deformed it, just from smoking out of a junction :(

A new one is now on order from www.mister-auto.co.uk - this time its a febi / bilstien one so might last longer then 7k miles?!!

You can, make an alloy spacer up. This is what i'll be doing for my track car, wouldn't do this on a road car though!
