Group2/rally shell prep specification.

Post by pandemonium001 »

i am looking for specific instructions for the preperation of the E21 shell.
I can find plenty for the escorts and like, but is there a booklet or anything for the e21.

Nope

Just experience common sense plus they are better built than a escort

Weld a tube between the front chassis rail, under the rad as you can flex them by hand if you swing on the arb's
Seam weld between the towers
And from my own experience of hard coolers and track days to find where the shell cracks

Seam weld around the rear bulkhead
Tie the cage to the b post
Reinforce the rear top mounts
Additional diff mount (anybody tried an e36 small case rear cover)
Copy the escort tension strut set up

Thanks Jason, thats most of what i thought anyway,
I dont plan on fitting a cage,
strut tops just like the e36? http://www.turnermotorsport.com/p-3440- ... t-kit.aspx
double diff mount was on the plan anyway, possibly make a sandwich plate to double mount the E21 diff, but the e36 one is a good idea.
please see my thread on 4cylinder section and any improvments i could make, please comment.

Thanks

Why are you not fitting a cage?

I have a pal down here in Cornwall, who has a fully prepped s50/3.0 powered rally e21. I'm going to take some photos this week so will post some here.

One the front you could try an e30 m3 cab style reinforcement plate, between the top of the strut and the top of the return section to the inner wing
The rears I had crack around the base where they come through the inner wing.

Also I have thought about an mx5 style reinforcement on each side running from the front cross member to the Gearbox mount then done to the diff mount, connected to a strongstrut z3 butnstrut kind of lower brace.

I had that on my rx7. Mx5 is pretty much a mini version of that cars design... Its called a power plant frame. Works a treat..

My car will probably never see track use to justify the inconvenience of a cage, plus i want to keep the use of my rear seats.

All good ideas raised above and i will endever to implement as much as i can, the strongstrut chassis brace looks easy enough to implement as well.

but 1 piece if possible and picking up front subframe, steering rack, chassis legs, trans mount points, rear subframe bolts, forward diff area.

You best get welding, it as an old and flexible shell by current standards

What about making the inner wings at the front into better box section or reinforcing that section with a triangular bar to the A pillar
