323i 79, Vacuum

Post by Atle_323i »

Hi,

My 79 323i has alot of vacuum hoses, and I got 1 hose which isn't connected anywhere it's just blocked at the end with a bolt.
So I found the diagram from ETK showing all hoses, and where they are connected.
But is that diagram correct, and showing exactly where each hoses is to be connected?

I tried to follow my hoses from start to end, but they aren't connected as the diagram from ETK shows. So how to find the correct diagram, if the ETK isn't correct?

Link to the ETK diagram
http://www.bmw-etk.info/parts-catalog/p ... 11/11_0885

Thanks

Atle

The diagram you linked to is for the version with AGR/EGR as used in Sweden and Switzerland. If your car does not have an EGR you need to look up the correct diagram for your car and year.

My car is originally from Sweden, it was imported to Norway a few years ago. So my car does have AGR/EGR. The diagram matches the components mounted, but apears to be connected wrong, if I follow the diagram.
I´m worried I´ll messed up the vacuum system if I reconnect the hoses as diagram says. So that is why I need to be sure it´s correct. I might draw a diagram showing current connections, just incase I have to revert it.

As said in another post, I´ve got some problems with the car when idling at normal temperature on the engine, The engine won´t idle correctly, it keeps dropping from 8-900 to 2-300 rpms and jumps up to about 8-900rpms, and then it starts over again, and won´t settle at normal idling.
And since one of the hoses for vacuum is blocked with a bolt, and not connected anywhere, and since the hoses connections doesn´t match the diagram, I think there might be a problem with this. And some of the hoses are in bad shape, so I thought about replacing it all, but I´m not sure if the diagram is suitable for my engine. But I found a diagram in the cars paper showing another diagram of the vacuum connections. I will see if I can compare and check out what is different.

Would it be possible to remove it all, is it really needed? Other pictures of 323i engines doesn´t have this at all.

Oh I'm sorry didn't make the connection at first. Correct, the 'mess' is caused by the EGR which may also be a cause of your issues, if not required I would remove the entire EGR, I am sure some people have experience with that and can chime in with some hints. It is likely that most of the hoses are from the stone age so you may want to replace them anyway.

+1 from my side. I've got a 323i since 2011 which was sold new in Sweden, so also with the factory EGR. My car had idling issues as well, and it sometimes hardly started when the engine was warm. One of the dutch forum members helped me a few times and we decided to remove the entire EGR system and then start over checking all connections and hoses. Never had any of those problems again. Only thing I guess I need to replace in the near future is the cold starter.

So my advice: take out the EGR, you probably won't need it after all.

Good luck.

Greetz,
Walter.

So you just removed it all, and just blocked the vacuum inputs in the intake manifold etc?
Or did you use some kind of recipe / guide?

As far as I know (I am not a true technician  ) we took out the entire EGR back in 2012. PeterV was my expert at hand and I believe he restored all vacuum lines to how they should be on a car without EGR. Just went through my Register topic, but there are no pics of this operation to be found there, so I am afraid I can't help you any more than this.

Maybe PeterV reads this and is willing to fill in some blanks

Once again, good luck!

Hey,

We did remove the complete EGR system and I do have some pictures but whem i'am looking at them now I do not know the details anymore.
I know that in 2012 the EGR system in Walters car was not working good, several hoses not connected and great doubts if all components would work. We made all connections the same as an "original 323i" so indeed the exhaust connections are closed etc. Maybe the pictures will help you.

Peter, thanks for sharing.

Those pictures shows the connections of vaccuum hoses when EGR is up and working. Pictures of the engine after removing those hoses would be nice to have. But if you don´t have any pictures, it´s ok. I spoke with a friend of mine, and we discussed removing those hoses, and it shouldn´t be any problems, a few of those vaccuum hoses is needed, and I think I know which to use, and which to remove.

Again, thanks for the effort :-)
