Mark's 316 M52/2.8 + Cat cams & Jenvey ITB's

most of englands side streets/roads have been blighted by the damn things.....bartgouda wrote:That street and those speedbumps are horrible man! I hat dutch speedbumps but that's really bad!
if you think that road is bad you should see some roads round sheffield! roads that havnt been resurfaced in 20 years (full of bodged repairs by council contractors) that are full of potholes.... but guess what? there's brand new speed humps all over them!

There's 11 of the ***kers in my road. Some of them are stupidly big too. I guess that's why so many townies are now driving 4x4's the size of Kent.

Re: Mark's M52/2.8
Just getting the bits together for the m50 manifold swap. I can't believe the price of the ''kits'' on eBay. £55 for a fivers worth of clips & tubing?! Mind you, CA are charging £554 for a manifold you can buy for seventy quid!
Anyway, figured I would get a BBTB and this one is 15% larger than stock. I think the internal diameter & butterfly are usually 64mm and this has been taken out to 68.5mm. Obviously it's been cleaned & polished too. It should work well and I guess it's pretty much makes the most of what it has available. I might go the whole hog with US spec M3 cams one day but for now, it's pretty much just how I wanted it.
I have to thank Nas for all his hard work and Jacko for lending a hand. They did a really good job in not a lot of time with me pestering them at every opportunity. It's given MIB the performance I always wanted it to have but it's equally happy doing the run to the shops or down to Cornwall. In fact, the whole car's pretty much finished apart from stiffer springing to lose some of the squat under acceleration and a proper retrim one day. Considering my interior cost less than 200 quid though, I'm pretty content. I would like a black alcantara headlining though.
I'm going to do an e12 diff conversion before next year too as I want to take it to Santa Pod.

Re: Mark's M52/2.8
MIB comes off the road for a modified rear beam and e12 LSD tomorrow. The diff is a 3:07 ratio and Mick @ Pristine had it rebuilt along with the rear brakes. Added bonus is that it's also de-cambered and has camber & caster adjustment plus an e28 M5 diff hanger. I'm also fitting the adjustable rear ARB I got from Jason and am going to stiffen the front ARB up a bit.
The inlet swap and big bore throttle body will go on straight after.
I want to do a track day at Brands in MIB too. It's a different car to the one I took around Bedford Autodrome.

Re: Mark's M52/2.8
you will notice a differance with the e12 lsd 3.07 diff... a very strong diff in my experiance... with a 5speed 265/5 close ratio dog box from the e28/e24 = 1.1 ratio drive in fifth.
is the diff hanger mounted near the wheel well as per mine? mind you does'nt mick have the same set up in his drag car?

Re: Mark's M52/2.8
your going to need to replace the crown wheel and pinion. judging by calculations it will be geared far too long.

Re: Mark's M52/2.8
with gearbox and diff combo i have(265/5 close ratio box.. 3.07 lsd diff) ,i found it way to short for 1st gear.. but excellent for 2nd gear take off's with the tyres rotating just ahead of there grip levels...

Re: Mark's M52/2.8
It's the exact rear axle from Mick's old car. Can crown wheel be changed in situ? I'm going to wait and see how it feels on the road though as it would be nice to have slightly longer legs in the lower gears.

Re: Mark's M52/2.8
mark, micks car was running the same(ish) set up as mine(m30 3.5) but with a 265 over drive gearbox unit if im not mistaken? is yours still a standard 323i unit?
mind you mick had a sheet load more power than mine when i spoke with him... he knows his beans so if he said its all good it will be i imagine..
is he working with e21's full time now?
p.s mine maybe a 262 cr as this is the only dog leg box that was avaliable for the e12/e28/e24 with a 3.07 ratio... i need to get underneath and confirm this for myself...

Re: Mark's M52/2.8
If you could come up with an inventive solution to the cable speedo, you could ditch the M20 box and fit an E36 M50 box. The E36 325i diff is a 3.1, the 328i diff is a 2.9, so the ratios would be spot on if you used that 3.07 diff. You would also have to mess with gear linkages and prop lengths though...

Or fit a dogleg behind the m52 with a 1:1 in top

Re: Mark's M52/2.8
I think that's the simplest solution although I may well have the ideal CWP by the weekend anyway. The diff and rear beam are all done now and tomorrow will be the manifold swap.Jason_323i wrote:Or fit a dogleg behind the m52 with a 1:1 in top
