don't read car mags unless I'm waiting for my tyres to be changed at the local tyre place.

op says he wants a bit more power from his m10. I think all he needs is a weber downdraft, not an m20 / rover (lol) ford engine?

if he said "I wanna swap my engine for more power" then we would've been on topic meister. I suppose ur right though. how many times u read an advert on eBay "I wanted to do X but ran outta money / time so selling abandoned project"

Well he did ask for performance ideas. If he was worried about silly suggestions or ideas that are difficult to work with he would have specified time, money or even mechanical experience constraints. Either way he just wanted our opinions.

Back on TOPIC now.

The obvious choice for bang for your buck as far as out right performance goes, is most likely a dodgy turbo job, but all things considered, you will need to seriously consider investing money and time otherwise you are more than likely to crash or even kill yourself if all aspects of your car aren't upgraded (ie, brakes, suspension, etc.) all of this resulting in plenty of monies. I am currently in a stage of doing alot of work on my 323i e21, and have found that even though i have planned it reasonably well it still requires alot more effort and cash to get it done right, been at it for over a year already and still no where near finished.

However, simple mods for getting the most out of your e21 would be getting yourself a decent set of sports suspension to make it so much fun in the twisty bits, and getting rid of excess weight (specially if you dont have working a/c). Then you should look at getting better air flow by upgrading filter/exhaust etc, although the gains aren't much more than 10bhp, but definitely gives better responsiveness and increase in your acceleration. Upgrading your diff to quicker ratio to something like 4.10 would yield excellent results in acceleration and driving pleasure, but also give higher revs and increase your fuel consumption. Getting better tyres inproves your grip. ETC. Basically there are limitless things you can do to your car as long as you have the imagination, money and willpower to get it done.

The next step for you to consider is how much time, how much money and how much power you want to invest in your car!

Hopefully my rant has helped a little.
