At 20/21 I was paying £950 for a modded E21 316.

i bought my E21 when i was 19. it's a love hate relationship. things WILL go wrong and you'll get frustrated, particularly if it's your daily driver/only car like mine is. however, it's put a smile on my face countless times. try adrian flux insurance.

i'd say unless you're spanner handy, avoid getting an E21 just yet if you're budget is relatively tight. however, once sorted well mechanically (like mine is now...touch wood) they're very reliable cars.

As for the reputation m3gaz, young lads and BMWs tend to be a no no to insurance companies! I wouldn't know why...
forgot to ask, what is your budget and what model you looking at?

Cheers for the advice. I've been looking at the 316 model, for insurance reasons mainly (actually fully). I'm hoping for it to be my daily driver and I'm not too concerned about getting my hands dirty, I had a Lancia Fulvia (I didn't got it roadworthy, sold it before the biggest bills needed paying) last year so an E21 is actually a step up in the quality stakes!

Edited to answer your question: I would pay about £1500 for an E21 I reckon
