A how much is it worth thread?
Re: A how much is it worth thread?
I'm not confident of the E21 rear axle and my M50 engine. I destroyed a driveshaft CV with little to no effort and I know Murran has done his fair share too with his M20 2.5, and there are many stories of the small E21 diffs going bang too. I don't want to be paying £60+ for a drift day to be worried if my rear axle is going to implode and fixing it all day. At my last DWYB I was using my E30 touring which the previous owner had left some driveshaft bolts out and loose, I snapped 4 driveshaft bolts within 15mins drifting at Pod. The driveshaft flew out and cracked the diff back plate, I wasted 2.5 hours waiting for someone to drill out my diff flange and to refit it all with new bolts. I was dropping diff oil for the rest of the day and the 100mile journey home due to the cracked back plate! I know that was an E30 but it was due to loose/missing bolts, however it highlights some of the concerns I have when driveshafts launch out at high speed... I don't want to bring a boot load of spares to each drift day!
I had two choices, try and fit an E30 axle to my E21 or go back to E30s for the time being. I had a look at doing the E30 axle on the E21 but it was looking likely I would miss the car for the summer, so I'm in the middle of M30ing an early E30 316!

Re: A how much is it worth thread?
thats basically the reason i'm thinking of selling it, i need reliability as i cant afford to keep fixing things, or have the car sat doing nothing while i wait for parts. it would be cool as hell to have as a drift car, but just not particularly practical.
Re: A how much is it worth thread?
the m50 kicks out quite a bit more torque than the 325i lump tho.
re-grease the cvs with fresh grease. dont lower the backend too much. i think you'll be ok. but id take a spare shaft with you to drift days just incase.

Re: A how much is it worth thread?
cheers murran, i'm going to try and get cracking on it tomorrow, i at least want to get the gearbox dropped out
Re: A how much is it worth thread?
forgot to add, take both shafts off and clean up all the bolts, make sure their not seized etc, getting the crap out of the 8mm allen key heads. then put them back onmurran wrote:but id take a spare shaft with you to drift days just incase.
then do a practice swap, learning exactly what tools you need and how to do it quickly...... expect to have to swap one out..... this prep will save you precious skidding time at drifting days IF one does break!
