E21 getting popular.

Post by e21-Mark »

Is it my imagination, or does the E21 seem to have suddenly got very popular?

There seems to certainly be several cars on the UK show circuit and definitely a healthy number of UK cars in regular service.

As I logged on here, I also noticed 64 other people online. Maybe Jeroen can confirm if site visits have increased?

Anyone else noticed a change?

Site visits are not exactly going up, they are on the decrease even, but that is a shift to the social media. People used to browse a series of forums but nowadays more and more people want to get up to speed in one place using social media like Facebook. I believe people are limiting themselves there, but on the other hand the level of the posts here is going upwards.

But, values are going up as well as the number and condition of cars at meetings. Not all that bad then!

I think that the crapy ones are fading out, leaving the better ones. Better cars = higher value

that is true ! Personally, forums are from my point of view, the best.

Otherwise yes, also here in my country I see a increase in E21, they almost dissapeared, but now the survivals are slowly marching out from the sheds and garages.

Yup, I get the feeling things are getting more superficial, not only with cars haha, people want a quick answer of simple info, less in-depth. Sad imo, agree that it is better to have some more info like on forums, also helps you to establish a thorough approach to things. But these days everyone complains te be soo busy. Yup, busy playing games on their phones all night haha!

Anyway, back on topic, agree with Koos 'uwbuurman', the cars that are surviving are better and better so average condition and value are on the increase indeed.

Here they seem to have gone up, a lot.

When I started the interior strip down and engine conversion on mine the only ones I could find were selling for $300-$1000 AU which is approx 150-500 GBP, not sure how that compares to euros.

Even though mine was a 323i manual I couldn't get any interest in it at all; not even offers; and at the time I didn't really appreciate it for what it was.

Now all the ones I see are $3000 (for an absolute wreck) and more like $6,000 for a decent condition 316 through $10,000AUD for a 323i Baur.

More than once I've wondered if I've done the right thing with mine. I am enjoying it, I guess, so there is that.

If you're not planning to own the car for a long time, choices can very much be driven by financial factors. If you're planning to be a long term owner it doesn't really matter anymore, then you should just make sure you get the most joy out of it! As a bonus values will be on the increase in the long run anyway.

Well said jeroen I've owned my mine for nearly 3 years now and it's cost me more than the increase in price when it's done it will be worth it though

Been at some classic car events and auctions the past months, and classic car values are right through the roof, the sky is the limit. You can always ask top dollar, but for minters that is being paid as well, without hesitation. And looking at the estimates for the Bonhams auction at the Monterey Car Week (tonite), it's getting worse rapidly. I've been around several 250 GTO's lately and oh yeah are they special, do they sound special and breathe a special atmosphere. But the GTO at tonight's auction is said to 99% sure cross the 60 mill $ mark. To me that sounds like a lot.

Update Aug 15: the car fetched 38 million USD which is below expectations, but still makes it the most expensive car at an auction, ever.

I'm constantly following E21s on mobile.de and autoscout24 and want to ask you something: Am I wrong or the price of E21s grow up significantly for about last year?
