Re: The M535i of baur.
I think that all cars we currently own will be lasting for many years.
None of us let us rot away.
Most likely i think also that in the Benelux the most classic bmws will be found.
This specific one will also be used to burn some old tires which i had kept for many years.
So: all 14" rims will be taken apart, in the neighbourhood are some little pretty roads
(jeroens knows where:))

Understeer is when you hit the wall with the front of the car and oversteer is when you hit the wall with the rear of the car. Horsepower is how fast you hit the wall. Torque is how far you take the wall with you.

Re: The M535i of baur.
I had never driven any E12, or perhaps a 520 around town once, but nothing that generated a lasting memory. With the suspension mods done to the M535i I was especially curious how this would be. Tonite, after seeing Ite sweat for the first time in his life and after being forced to clean a set of BBS wheels, it was time to crank up this new toy of his.
The basis is a rust free but not mint car, but it looks very original up to the spoilers, bloody rare Marine blue sports seats and dogleg gearbox. Started off with a thorough warm up that also gave me the opportunity to get a feel of the car. No rattles or shakes. You can feel that the dampers are not fresh, and that the 14" shoes have antique soles so you don't get your hopes up too high. The brakes (4 pot fronts from the factory!) are surprisingly strong and again free from shakes, only thing is that the car slightly pulls to the right under heavy braking, but for the rest it gives enough confidence and a good feel. The antique mikado design of the front suspension is known to be sensitive to issues but feels solid. No rattles, shakes, freeplay or noises. Sounds like a rear strut top bearing (left side) is shot but that's about it. Looks like the car was well looked after.
Sofar for the initial feel. Time to increase the pace a bit even though I really didn't want to go too far not knowing what oil was in there, even though it was changed recently, and not knowing how the rest is set up. Valve clearances, fuel mixture, etc etc. The sound clearly is more M49 or M88 than M30, rough like the M49, definitely not as silky smooth as the M30. Low end torque is already good and as far as we tried the rev range it is pretty linear, torque available all the time. The engine feels strong but not super strong, no wonder, things may be completely different after a good tune up.
What amazes most is how the car feels. The stability, even in long turns, is impressive. Custom M535i springs and sway bars do their work real good and almost make you forget you're on old shocks and old 14" stuff that once qualified as rubber. Only when provoked in short turns or roundabouts you get real understeer, but that has to do with the old stuff and nothing with the car's balance. Even in this setup its way better than the regular E9, E24 or E28. It even comes close to the E28 M5 which has a pretty well laid out suspension. Agile for its weight class and very limited body roll. If only every E24 or E28 was like this!
So all 'n all this M535i exceeded my expectations by far. It is certainly heavier and less agile than an E21, but it also offers more comfort and doesn't need to be pushed hard to keep up with a sporty driven E21 323i. It isn't an E30 either. But it may very well be a perfect classic travel companion. One that carries the entire family and then still is able to provide loads of sporty driving pleasure while the passengers are hardly bothered. Its a known fact I'm not into heavy cars, the average 3 series already feels heavy to me. But if I were to choose a sports limousine, this would certainly be among the best options. Makes me very curious how this car will be after some TLC!

Re: The M535i of baur.
It was great fun. Very soon, a lot of issues will solved.
Some are indeed minir, but there're also some bigger things as a new set of 4 Bilsteins.
We will see!

Understeer is when you hit the wall with the front of the car and oversteer is when you hit the wall with the rear of the car. Horsepower is how fast you hit the wall. Torque is how far you take the wall with you.
Re: The M535i of baur.
Nice report Jeroen. It looks as if Ite has won the jackpot with this one.
