It is indeed.
In the end it was all down to the jetting. The standard idle jets supplied by Weber were 45's which appear to have been too small. Whether this was due to the mileage (142k) or some other issue I don't know. The engine is otherwise totally standard (afaik).
It's running great now. Hope this thread can help anybody else with Weber issues.
