Re: Solex A41 Weber replacement.
Yes I'm aware that installing the Wer would detract from originality but so many of you have told me it's a good option, and that the replacement is exactly the same that I thought it a good option. Can anyone link me to a refurbishment kit for the Solex A41 please? I know I have a problem with it as the mechanic had told me that when the car reaches high speeds something opens up in the Carburettor in the bottom, and there is something plastic with regards to that thing opening Which is broken....anyone have an idea what it is?

Hi,
Can I ask why you wish to replace the Solex carb?
I realise it is a most complex beast, having, for example, 5 devices for the automatic choke alone.
What is the problem with it, and what benefits do you expect to get from the Webber conversion.
One of the buyers guides states that engines never run well after the conversion, and suggest converting back to the Solex. Is this true?
Cheers
Mike

It's not true - they just didn't know how to adjust the Weber properly.Mikelead wrote: One of the buyers guides states that engines never run well after the conversion, and suggest converting back to the Solex. Is this true?

Re: Solex A41 Weber replacement.
These adjustments are an issue with the 4A1 as well. Perhaps our local carb man Peter_V can confirm this as I'm no expert when it comes to carbs, but what I heard many times is that you will run into issues if you try to save on a rebuild and if you try to cut corners while adjusting. With fresh stuff, paying attention to the known weakpoints and when carefully following the adjustment manual step by step you should be fine with the 4A1 as well as the Weber replacements.

Re: Solex A41 Weber replacement.
Does anyone know why the manual says to fully depress the throttle before a cold start?
Is this just to give a good squirt of fuel from the accelerator pumps, or something more subtle?
Having made several adjustments as per the manuals, she starts reasonably well from cold, needing a few dabs of throttle for around 10 seconds to obtain an idle, then the auto choke systems will maintain a steady fast idle until the engine warms, settling to around 900 rpm.
Then the car drives well, revving freely and pulling well, though she seems to drink a lot of fuel. Otherwise happy with the Solex.
What mpg should I expect?

The writing that you must give the pedal a full hit is not neccesary.
The MPG is normal if you drive normal. With a lott of second stage activation it wil be drinking more than the driver itself.
I am between 1 liter at 9 km and 1 to 10 km.

Re: Solex A41 Weber replacement.
Maybe a Weber 38 dgas could be a nice option for this engine. Somebody has tried this on an M20? Would be nice to get some experience about this combination.
And how did the story end, priest 008? Did you go for a swap ?

How did my story end? Well...... not happily ever after that's for sure. Haha My car still sleeps. I start her up every3 days but now I have a new problem. The clutch stopped working. I've alwas had a leak in the hydraulic fluid which mean that when I drove the car, I would fill the fluid reservoir every 3 months but now the fluid is fine but the clutch just doesn't work. I used to get it working by pumping it, but now, not evening pumping it works
so I can't even move her.

Re: Solex A41 Weber replacement.
I had a 38 DGAS on the M20b20. More linear power and a somewhat better throttle response and maybe 5 hp more. Overall a nice upgrade and easy to tune aswel. I only had a little problem with very cold starts but I think this may be solved with different choke jets?

Re: Solex A41 Weber replacement.
Dirk, thanks for posting your experience. Sounds good. As I would assume. I think for the cold start you will find the solution in the choke flap adjustment or in a the choke unit itself. Is it an a or e choke ? There is also a very hidden horizontal screw for the cold start rev adjustment. The 38 like the 32/38 has no extra choke jets, this issue is only regulated by the flaps, mechanical adjustment and the choke position.
