Thanks guys!
Been assembling the engine in the 320/6 this weekend...but a problem arrived

the original timing-belt won't fit

The size is 1044x25mm 127z . It seems like the belt has to many teeth...the length is ok. Do you know of other belt-sizes for the M20? some photos :

Hi ,
I beleive there's two sets of timing belts, 127 and 128 teeth.
One has round teeth and the other square teeth, although im not 100% sure about that.
Maybe someone else can help you out.

ac/dennis is right there were two types of teeth styles on belt, you have the wrong one, no probs easy solution, find another engine which will have the right sprockts to fit your new belt!!

Don't have a spare engine laying around ufortunately

...think I'll bring the belt drives to my local bmw-dealer and try on the other belt.

Indeed there are 2 timing belts. Last year the garage changed it on my 320/6 and they ordered the wrong one, and what while I knew that there are two diffirent styles. So... a common thing to have wrong.

Hi again! There are actually three different belt types! 127,128 and 110 teeth, my car had the 110 teeth belt. I've ordered it, so hopefully the engine will fire up soon

Is it possible to tell which belt from the chassis number or do I need to start stripping the engine down to see for myself?

Dont know m8,
Maybe the production year and month of the engine will tell you more.
Differences between the nr of teeth is countable, but not when the belt is still on your car I guess.

Retrobeemer: If you have the 7 last digits of your chassis number i can look it up in ETK parts database, i have the program on my pc. Maybe it will show wich tybe of belt you have.

But if you have had your engine replaced by one from another production year, you may order the wrong part.

That's right, the engine must be matching numbers with the car, else you can get the wrong size...

Time for some update! The 320/6 is sold
The 323i was painted autumn 2008 and my plan is to have it finished by may this year.(some minor details remaining, electrics etc.)
Slow progress here...been pretty occupied with finishing my studies.
