but one college school came to its conclusion, that putting up a christmas tree would affend the muslims living in holland, so they did'n put a christmastree in the central hall.
yeah right. as if i go to turkey, the muslims will stop having rammadan or so, because they think i would be affended by that.
i think they just should adapt to the western holidays and stuff, but they are just being selfisch and conservative.
Turkey my friend is the most westernised country amoungst the Muslim world. i've believe when in Rome do as the Romans do. The fact that a school in holland chose not to put a tree was the choice of the locals not to offend the muslims NOT the choice of the Muslims
We have the same here in the UK, like E21meister says a local council (tower hamletts, newham) decide that it will offend BUT did they ask if it offends no but its POLITICLY CORRECT to do so
An exmaple of the PC world that we live in, a guy breaks into a house and gets bitten by a dog, normally we'd shout HOORAY not inthe pc world the owner of the dog gets fined £2000 the dog gets put to sleep because he did'nt display a sign stating that he had a dog for the burgulars safety

whoa i wasnt aware of this, thats PC overload! we say whatever we like in nz, and i dont think anyone says 'happy holidays'. most people work right up till like the 21st or 22nd anyway, so we arent on holiday, so it doesnt even make sense anyway
on the religion/pc thing, i read that they're removing all the crosses and religious items from public schools in Italy. its stirring a fair bit of controversy over there apparently.
the most pc thing in nz is that there is a minister for political correctness. seriously. how pc is that!

My daughters school had there navitiy play on monday and for once there was no p.c bullshit..carols, three wise men the works.. the best thing is that childern from all walks of life and religion were taking part and enjoying themselfs.. is that not what christmas is about.. celebration????
This country is being counsumed with p.c bullshit... why teach/celebrate in school about differnt religions and then go all red faced when xmas is about??
If people get offended then tuff!! as ayrds mentioned "when in rome"..
faith / Religion is each persons choice to follow... so yes you do get the odd few that belive there way is the only way.. but dont accomodate them pity them.. there is a bigger picture out there.

99,9% of Christians are tolerant of other religions
99,9% of Muslims are tolerant of other religions
99,9% of Jews are tolerant of other religions
Because we know it's all the same religion. But beware of the 0,1% remaining.

true what your are saying,
in the netherlands, a beach party went completely out of control when hooligans from Rotterdam went crazy, they attacked the police, first the police fired warning shots. but they didn't stop. then they fired accurate. (in the leg, you know) but accidently, a 19 year old was hit and died. (friends of him say, He has nothing to do with it (yeah right, he accidently walked in front of the hooligans.) now they are looking if the dozen police men can be seued for there deeds.
plot: hooligans are good, Police to courthouse.
The fact that a school in holland chose not to put a tree was the choice of the locals not to offend the muslims NOT the choice of the Muslims
true, but they had to have a reason doing that, i think people are still wining about this, if they just could being busy with their own work. it would'nt be a problem. and it save a lot of money in the long term.

If you all want to "enjoy" a massive bunch of "political correctness" and "puul down your own trousers not to offend them", please come to (not so) sunny Spain and take a look at all the stupid things our "beloved" president has done all over the years...
For example: They've prohibited crucifixes at public schools not to offend muslim people, but keep on giving them public money to build their mosques.
I don't want to look rude or offensive, but I think YOU are the one to respect the customs of the country you're living, and not the other way.
I've spent some years living in Britain, and never had a problem with anyone. Just respect local customs and adapt myself to a new way of living.
Just my two pence...

Interesting discussion which I have just stumbled upon whilst bored witless at work..
I'm a Muslim based in the UK and a proud British Citizen. My parents have been here since the early 70's and have worked hard and honestly in this country, never sponging from the state and contributing to and honouring both the laws and customs of the Country.
I know
a lot of Muslims and I have never met one who said that Christmas shouldn't be celebrated by the nation publicly with the display of Christmas Trees, lights etc. It's absolutely absurd, and I don't know where this idea has come from? Me and my wife give Christmas cards (and Eid - the Muslim holy day - cards) to our neighbours and have a great relationship and understanding with everyone on our street. 99% of the Muslims I believe are like this, making every effort to get on with our neighbours and the society within which we live. Yet somehow the 1% seem to get all the limelight and all the good work that is done by people is undone by the media plastering it all over the news and papers. Extremism sells. Simple as, it's like a return to the damn cold war!
Also, just so you know a Muslim according to Sharia law must observe the laws of the country in which he/she lives, another interesting fact as a Muslim a main tenet of it's faith is that you accept Jesus, Moses, Abraham et al as Prophets of God and as such there is a profound respect for all the people and faiths for these great Prophets.
It vexes me when we're doing so much for social cohesion in this country that the odd prick comes up and says something stupid (which is normally always contrary to Islam anyway a la Osama bin Laden, Radical clerics like Captain Hook, and stupid kids who don't know anything about faith but just want a ruck) and we are all then painted by the same broad brush (as a few people have done in this thread).
To sum up, I have no idea where they come up with these ideas to ban the cross, Christmas Trees etc, it's completely ignorant, just as it is ignorat to ban the Hijab, the building of mosques etc. At the end of the day aren't we living in a democracy!? Don't let the Media's scare mongering drive us all into the vicious cycle of hatred. Love and be loved people!
As Aydin perfectly said - truth to be told its not the foriegners that complain its the left wing, politicly correct, tree hugging, hippy, anti everything brigade.
Btw a belated Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone!!
say what ever you like

You are sure thinking and acting the right way!... May you be blessed... and for the 11th of August, let me wish you "ramadan mubarak".
I am sometimes asking myself "why don't people try to take the good things and do them..." but it seems so difficult.
...and to answer to the question of the thread, if I know the person, I will say "happy hanukkah", "merry christmas', "have a blessed christmas", or "happy holidays" if I am not sure.
