The thing is the LSD is NOT the one that gets destroyed which is the QUAIF unit! its the propshaft gear end the crumbles, ive destroyed 2 LSD`s with my 2.7 and it was the same thing!, now if you fitted the quaif LSD and the propshaft (sun) gear hasnt been uprated then you`ve wasted your money, i could have done that myself with quaif but going with frits conversion its the best wat, however quaif has been around for years and also Hartge could have done that but they also fitted the E12 .. so with this you then think why E12, its bigger and more robust ... if the M535/635 has them then your safer... i wouldnt pay over a grand for a diff that wont do anything better than the standard LSD... you should check to see what exactly they have changed, also an overheated LSD wont benefit much cos thge diff needs to run cold on high speeds thus will causing failure... in my honest opinon its a waste of money BUT, as richard from frits bits always says - Suck it and see! with my diff, i can thrash the bollocks out and still be the same i dont worry anymore about the final drive...

I can't use an e12 I don't have a dog leg, and
I don't wanna use the m50 manual box. m50 swap will be shit with such a low ratio rear diff.

I'm sure nothing I do is gonna make me rear drive indestructible?

I'm thinking that the diff isn't properly braced which might be the reason halfshafts break. also I think it also has something to do with the driveshaft angle. my driveshafts sit straight n the camber is stock so I think theres less strain?

there is no way I'm saying I'm an expert. so maybe I'm wrong. if I have wasted my money n break stuff all the time. then you lot can say you told me so.

You can put any ratio want you want in a 12 diff as it is a 188 CWP nowt to do with a dogleg, most e12’s are 3.05 which is not good for a dogleg. The way forward is my e30 plug and play swap when it gets sorted, with with all things it is taking more time but we should have a mock up for the end of august.

In addition, the qualife is only part of the diff; you can still eat the CWP with too much torque, and cv joints

the stock 323i diff is rated to 280lbs ill be running 180lbs so I think 100lbs of buffer zone should be ok? I'm not planning on having any more than this amount of power.

the prices I was getting to rebuild the e12 diff n then the ready made beam from fritz was way more than how much the quaife cost.

ok the oil pickup pipe fitted a treat. so i started on with fitting it all back together.

so yesterday i kinda had a rest and decided that today i would start work early and the goal was to fit the engine.

So today I managed to get this lot done.

Fit e30 starter - (cheers murran),
sort out some coolant hoses.
Chop the oil dipstick tube - i dont have any clue if it will accuratley tell me the level - most likely not! ill figure sommat out though
fit the flywheel and torque on the bolts,
Fit spigot bearing.
Fit the clutch + cover (brand new sachs)
fit the gearbox x2 - this was a PAIN!!! i actually fitted it on then discovered the spring clip which holds one side of the arm had come off! ARRGH.
wait for a mate to show up.
Fitted the engine - now this isnt really that easy at all. lots of down a bit back a bit - gearbox up a bit etc etc, Managed it though.

heres some pics -

Stuff left to do -
Fit the prop on and the half shafts.
Fit a Fuel line - this is a pain in the ass and one of the bolts holding the tank on has rounded off now GRR.
Wire up fuel relay
Fit Rad - custom brackets - and possibly some coolant hoses.
Figure out where to mount ECU and find a smaller washer bottle
Engine wiring (9 wires!)
switch over to my spare 323i dash clocks
Fit power steering lines
Engine service / new coolant.
General tidying up and then off to exhaust shop.
I have less than a week to sort all that out

Good work Nas. What are you going to do with the exhaust? Single exit or 323 twin stylee?

cheers mate.

I've been thinking about it, but my car hasn't got the cut out on the other side so I'm not going to go with a 323i style. I was thinking of having a re-amimya style dolphin tail pipe or e36 style twin pipes in matt black.

Im not going for loud exhaust as that will do my head in. im going to have plenty of induction roar though, i have some hks mushroom air filters i was going to use.

btw i didnt have any induction elbow clearence issuez. i cut down a short radius samco elbow. theres a whole inch or so between it and the suspension turret.

Looking good!

If anyone has picked a 323i exhaust you will know theres a huge weight saving to be had with a single box! My m50s exhaust is single even though its a 323i with two cut outs.

You may want to modify the steering linkage to remove the guibo and mounts. Mine has ended up slightly to close to the manifold than id like.

Good point.

I'm just too shallow and like the twin look.

They'll have to lengthen or bend by the flange that joins to the downpipe, but where it hits the steering guibo is further up. You might be fine, it seems nigel was, not sure why!
