There's no difference between the engine in a 325 sport to a 325 auto or a 325 cabriolet. The only variations of 2.5/m20 are high or low compression.

I know there's no difference. But if a car has had it's heart taken out to me it's not the same.
Others may not mind but I want an original car with the right bits on

THIS ^^^
Further than that you ideally need to take the side skirts off as they allow dirt and salt to fester there and rotting the sills if not removed and cleaned annually (mostly never happens). The front bulkhead needs close inspection along with signs of bodged repairs in the scuttle, under the transportation pads at the front (mistakenly called/used as jacking points), rear valance, flitch panels and the biggest killer of E30s a crusty roof - hit the headlining and listen out for flakes of rust.
It's no secret that sports values are on the rise which could mean that there will be MOT dodging cars being fillered up and will be sold on as mint. Mint sports are like hen's teeth. It is definitely a case of 'caveat emptor' when buying a sport, if you don't know what you're lookng for take someone who does.
