Depends on number of gears too though. Most autos are a compromise on gears and its not just the slow change speed that lets them down. Thats whi no-one uses them in F1 and touring cars etc.

I thought (correct me if I am wrong) but 1/4 mile cars use auto's. I heard of a chap that had an Escort RS Turbo motor in the back of his Mini and changing from a manual to an auto knocked over a second of his time.
If you remove the auto valve body and replace it with a manual valve body then you are controling when the gearbox changes. You can also adjust the the torques convertor to allow some gearbox slip.
To me a well sorted auto box sounds great.
