I don't like to say it, but I told you so. The car is f***. I have scrapped about 3 E21's in the last 2 months that are concourse compared to this car. I am going to be very brutal here and give you some free advise. Stop f*** about with this motor and call the scrappy and tell him to take it. With any luck he will give you £50 for it. Then go out and buy a decent e21 for £500. Why anyone would suggest you reshell is it beyond comprehension.

All is well when people wish you the very best of luck with your restoration, or that you are brave or they offer help, advice and parts.... your car is only good for one things, recycle metal....and even then, there is not much metal left. The advise people really should be giving you is stop wasting your time and effort and money with this rust magnet and start again. This is what I call sound advice

Scrap it and start with a good foundation.......which is what I recommended weeks ago

This is nothing personal, just some sound "honest" advice

Rust in reality is like cancer "cant be cured" comes back and when you buy all this rust treatment its like chemotherapy, it delays the process but eventually comes back.......

All depends how far you whant to go with it. Anything is possible but all depends on the rest of the body sheel. I suppose everyone has their own idea of what they would do

Well Nas has really come through this time! He has offered me his shell and some other bits and bobs, Just need somewhere to cannibalize his shell for the bits required. Got my pals dad on board too, a very experienced mechanic with loads of welding experience to help and he is bringing his oxy setup to the party!

Big thanks to everyone on here and especiallly Jim and Nas for their ongoing help and support. Anything I can do for them, well goes without saying really...

Watch this space..... :D :D

I was just going to use tin foil.... Will that do?

Ps, love the signature!. I was in Germany last year on tour and one of the places we stopped at had a brilliant jagermeister mirror in the digs...Sadly the guy wouldn't sell it! Something of an antique apparently... Such a cool logo!

I think he's well aware of how much work it requires and the fact it would be simpler to get another E21 etc. Kudos for taking up the challenge.

My pal is restoring his 323 and says the restoration is half the fun. Plus not everyone can afford to replace their car and are on a budget.

+2 S'true, part of the fun is the 'build', but at least with mine I'm starting with a sweeeeeet body that only needs a little welding on one sill. Still can't wait for it to be finished though.

wizOr and retro are so right. I spent most of my youth with my nose stuck in one car mag or another, dreaming of the day I had the time/space/equipment/assistance to restore something. I had an XR3i that was prob more rotten than my 316 and I ran that for a couple of years (and about 25k miles) before I bought the BM. If I could have dry stored my car back in '98 I wouldn't have half the job I've got on my hands but that just wasn't a possibility then.

I've got this thing about bringing stuff back from the dead, so to speak although this has mainly been confined to rare and exotic musical and electronic equipment. Time to up the stakes a little with my car i thought.

Yeah I could buy a bargain basement car with any number of hidden issues or I could sell a pile of stuff I don't want to part with and buy something really nice but for me, the fun and more importantly the experience and knowledge gained with a project like this is the vital aspect. My only real regret was not buying a 323i when I had the chance. (youv'e got to love that 6 cyl soundtrack). My 523i made up for it in some ways tho!!

Thanks again peeps for all the help and support! :D :D

if the guy wants to do let him get on with it. as long as hes under no illusion how much time/work is required, and how much skill is needed to do it right, and DO do it right or there is no point in doing anything.
any idiot can acceptably bodge a patch in the boot where no-one can see it but this sort of steel grafting takes something more! :D

everyone keeps saying on this post f*** the car off get rid. DONT!!! you have said the magical words bring back from the dead, do it!! that scuttle panel looks worse than it is, dont get me wrong the panel is f*** yeah but its easily fixed, i spent about 3 nd a half weeks rebuilding mine from scratch using 20 gauge sheet steel... now thats not for the feint hearted. i did this because i didnt know about walloth nesch. if i had to do it again i'd buy the panel from them simply cut the old fuker out and spot weld the newy in. as murran says do it right. the scuttle panel from walloth nesch isnt cheap but it is the right way to do it. if you want any tips or if you get stuck with any welding drop me a pm and ill be more than happy to give a point in the right direction.
