That was the wrong one, so I changed it.

There is a Support between the valve cover and the intake. The two holes are for this support

The support on your earlier pic is on the exhaust side, perhaps from an EGR mount. The latest E21 323i valve covers do have a similar mount to relieve the intake manifold, but these mounts are at the intake side. Believe that was introduced late 1981 but I'd need to look it up to make sure. Most E21 323i valve covers are without any mounting points, like on your last pic.

On my E30 the Support is on the other side:

Hmmmmmmm you may be correct there! I thought the E21 bracket was also on the intake side but your pic shows the right version sir!

I´m not sure if there´s a seal between the housing cover and the transmission housing - i can´t find a part in the BMW part catalog
When disassembling there was not really a sign of it like on the other side with paperleftovers
On the other side there is a paper seal! I will coulk it with hylomar for safety before i get sleepless nights!

And i am not sure that the Brown seal ring mounted the right way. The arrow Shows the other directon of Rotation
