It is hard to admit indeed, but you did! And what's worse, knowing you're to blame yourself, really makes you want to hit yourself on the head. Time and money wasted, valuable lesson learned... but once she's up and running you'll forget pretty quickly... hope that point can be reached soon!
Analysis... looks like conrod bearing material indeed as in 3rd layer, guess these are shot due to oil starvation.

Well, When I took the engine out I somehow unfortunately broke the tab that the gear linkage bolts through on the top of the gearbox (maybe it was weak already?), so I got my welder mate to weld it back on, unfortunately he stuck a weld that interfered with the shifter arm, I didn't realise this until I had put the engine and box under the car, so I had to take it all back out - file it down and then refit it all again.
I got the new backup engine in and running last night. I was so annoyed because it was tapping to begin with but after a minute the tapping stopped. With the bonnet shut you can barely tell running. Took it for a drive around the block, its fast as you would expect and this engine is very smooth, well apart from a slight air leak somewhere (typical!). I don't want to count my chickens based on one drive around the block but I think I'm in the clear now.
I've missed all the shows this year, so I think I will only get chance to go to a couple of local meets now and generally just enjoy hooning it. Its starting to get cold now to I'll have to cash the tax back in soon and then park it up for winter.
Ill post some really high res pics in a week or so.

I forgot how awesome 24v e21s are. Car is stupid almost dangerously fast. There is a massive improvement over the m50b25. Really pins you in the seat.
It handles really well with the lighter m52 much less understeer.. Quick rack takes some getting used to. You can turn so fast. The harder rear springs have made an enormous difference to the handling it doesn't squat so much now..
I pit some ds2500 pads in and the brakes are much better. Still need bedding in.
All the grief the car gave me has now been forgiven

congrats for putting it back together, mine went yesterday to the stroker swap and as I was there, on the parking were 2x E30 with S50..I had to take one out for a spin (literally)...
I think the M50 is the proper size and power engine for the E21, S50 is too damn fast, spinning in 3rd gear, everytime you floor it you go over 200km/h...not heathly

You see now I think I should have gone s50. It's the weight of the engine that put me off them. I've found that the E21 is very sensitive to front end weight.
Hopefully I'll get near s50 power when I build up my m52 stroker.

Wheels are three piece, made by MTi, they are stamped 1989 and made in west Germany. They are very old but are still very straight and true, even the dishes are the original ones. I am thinking of getting a couple of wider dishes for the rear. Nothing too crazy though, being low and slow will get boring very quickly.
I would never sell them now I know how rare they are.

My car is at Mals getting some touch-ups done, because Mal is super busy (which is good) I have had plenty of time to chillax and get on with other stuff. I think all I need to do on my car now is fix a slight oil leak from somewhere, fit master cylinder spacers (when problemchilds mate sorts them eventually) and then im sorta finished.
I bought this AC schnitzer gear for my z3m short shifter mech.
I also bought a set of BBS RS, not sure yet if they will make it onto the car, may sell them.
