I have hectic work and family life, few years ago it'd have been boozing nightclubs and gigs, the current hectic lifestyle is a different sort of fun but more rewarding!
I'm trying to recall whether the rear strut top mounts have a bearing in them, Gonzo describes a knocking noise on bumps which sounds like either what I had when I missed washers out on my front strut rebuild on the 635, or it could be similar to the knocking that Jeroen describes in the tech section from worn front strut top bearings.

Im 99.9% sure that the rears dont have bearings in em Jim. Ive seen the top mounts without the bushes in and there's nothing else to them. Its down to a few possibilities. Either the 2 top nuts are not tight enough to the top mount and bush so there clunking together when the strut is hit (which i cant see it being the case as ive re-done them 3 times now and its as tight as i can get it) The bushes are knackered and are giving too much play. Or as you suggest, i am missing some kind of washer/spacer.
All the rubbers, gaskets, bump stops and bushes visibly look in good condition and when ive been out driving i always inspect the rears for signs of the problem - Everything looks fine and everything is tight.
The only solution i can personally think of is to buy some stronger/uprated top mounts and bushes for stuffer suspension
ps Jimbo, when i say you have a hectic lifestyle I dont mean it in a bad way at all. Your family and career should always come first mate.

if you know everthing is tight and sound/correctly assemblaled (appologies for spelling im drunkk). then it must be the rubber in the top mounts. order some new ones. the springs rest on the mount that bodies on the car. the shocks are far stiffer than the 26 year old originals. i bet its this thats playing hell with the rubber mounts!
if you turn the stiffness of the shocks on to warp 9 does it knock more?

Have'nt really used any other setting other than the softest so far. But like you say, i bet thats the case. I got some new bushes from TomC the other day so i need to try it with those, but their just standard ones so may just be running into the same trouble down the line. Will have a goosey on the net and see if i can find some uprated ones.
