I replaced the problematic FI on my US version 320i and couldn't be happier.
Fuel economy has improved, and so has performance. Maybe a brend new 320i had better performance, but by now wear and tear had taken its toll on the FI performance. I just used a 2002 manifold with a 32/36 and even left the injectors in place. Fuel delivery is via a low-pressure aftermarket electric pump.

downdraft - best for street car
sidedraft - good for racing and super sound but worse fuel economy

Mark, as you understand, I will look for this post again and then vote, in about 3-4 months...(maybe more, if I don't fit the carb as soon as I get them)
Hope to vote on the second choice, though

Better MPG.. Cutting out at high speeds though. That may yet be traced back to the fuel pump though.

Sorry for my bad english, but what do you mean by "cutting out at high speeds" ?
You mean that the better economy mentioned above ("better MPG") is cut out at high speeds, or do you mean that the car cuts out in high speeds, so this equals to worse performance?
If it is the 1st, then this is not bad, it is more sincere IMHO, this means that this carb can give you economy if want, or performance if you prefer..
It would be much worse if you had worse economy at low speeds, and also worse performance at high speeds...
All this is a question, as I just ordered a weber carb from Mark and I am trying to foresee what to expect when I fit it on the car...

Cutting out at high speeds is most likely down to a failing fuel pump and fuel starvation. It's certainly not normal.
Pistonheader was the last person I recall fitting an m10 with a Weber and he loves it. You will too Petroscf.

it transformed the car's cold starting (it now starts 1st turn of the engine, even in the winter in -8deg celcius after having been left for 8 days...it only took 1-2 secs to start), improved the economy if driven normally (driven hard, it's probably worse, but you get better performance), and it makes a much better noise. what's not to like?
the only time it was struggling to start was due to crappy spark plugs.
i still yearn for more power though

Over at the BMW2002FAQ message board there is a jetting prescription for 32/36 carbs that has been used by many with great success.
It is supposed to improve performance and gas mileage. I haven't tried it, but might do so soon.
Here's the link:

I don't have webers, but I replaced the old mech injection with EFI and quad throttle bodies (kind of like dual SD webers I guess). It was bloody good. Didn't make enormous amounts more power, but it was much more even across the rev range. Probably a few more $ than webbers, but nice to have for future upgrades.
Cheers

is it also required to convert from automatic to manual choke as well? Or are there Webers to fit cars with automatic choke?
(I don't think that any E21 with carb had manual choke from factory, at least mine didn't-and it's an early model...could BMW go back later on?)
I just got the 28/36 but it has got a manual choke, so I can't replace my solex which is automatic........................opinions?
