driving on wrecked wheels...

I did a trip to the snow last weekend with some mates, in my flatmate's Subaru Forrester (turbo). Its about four hours away, so a fair journey. Anyway, we're there and getting excited, driving up the mountain road and BAM! out of nowhere is a massive pothole that sounded like it should've ripped the whole front suspension off. The car felt normal though so we carried on up the mountain and inspected it at the top (there wasn't anywhere to stop on the way anyway). Here's what we found:

btw, these are Work (Japan) 18" wheels and Pirelli tyres, each rather top-end items. The tyre still held pressure when we got to the top, so we didnt bother changing it and went snowboarding. When returning to the car, it was still holding the air fine! So rather than swap the space saver on, we drove back to town that night, then ended up doing the four hour journey back on it too (thats 4 hours at about 110kph, so god knows how long it would've taken at 80kph max that you can legally do on a spacesaver...).

Anyway, just thought I'd share this cos I thought it was rather impressive, particularly as if you've ever been to NZ you will know that our roads are never long and straight, or of the highest quality.

I'm pretty sure that cheaper wheels would have been oval shaped or torn to shreds and similarly I don't think that cheaper tyres would've held pressure on such a damaged rim. Quality parts FTW!!!

To be fair though, mate, the wheels hardly look sturdy enough to be climbing mountains :)
We see it regularly on Neighbours and Home and Away, people going into the bush, not prepared

lol everyone thinks nz is part of aussie...

the 'mountain road' is fully paved, but not in the best condition. on a normal day you can take any old car up there no worries, so having low profile tyres doesn't matter here. the thing i was saying though was not that this happened, but that it held together like that and we drove four hours of (winding and poor condition) nz roads back home on it

btw, how funny is it that whenever anyone is going camping in the bush or out on a boat trip, you know they're about to kill someone off Home and Away. That, or Alf will save the day! haha
