i read the sticky and it didnt really clear everything up. i have a box from a '79 323 that was shipped to the states. the box is marked with a 242.... part number. did a google search and i found that its either a four speed or a dogleg 5 speed. which one is it. i can post pics of the part number if needed. thanks

Then what wasn't clear in the sticky? Not that hard to keep the 4 sp and dogleg 5 speed apart after reading but you could post a few photos and we'll tell you what part you didn't read

The easiest way to recognize ANY 5 speed is the extension of the gearbox housing
since the housing does not have an extension part it clearly is a 4 speed indeed
