Meguiars clay bar kit or the Autoglym version? has anyone used both? can I have your opinions please.

i personally don't rate either that highly, but i'd go for the megs kit if you really have to.

probably the best clay bar out there is the bilt hamber one, but you have to get it online.

I've been using the meguires one on my cars, i'm very happy with it. I'll deffo be trying the bilt hammer one next though as its designed to be used with water alone (no lubricant required) so will work out much cheaper

I think it's like anything that becomes ''scene'' and you can spend a bloody fortune if you so wish. Fact is, most of us are sporting twenty something year old paint and there's no real benefit to spending a mint on polish & clay bar.

IMHO.....
.....A bucket and sponge just doesn't cut it when you own classic cars. The paint needs more care and attention in its old age than ever before. Also ,i reckon that polishing your car when the paint isn't "clay bar clean and smooth" is a waste of time and can do a lot of damage. Thumbs up to clays from me

No, you misunderstand me. I'm all for a clay bar, just not for spending mega money on one when a regular priced one will do the job just as well imo.

So back to the start now any experiences on the use of (different) clay bars?

Well im enjoying all this input from you guys. I ordered the Meguiars kit with two clay bars and bottle of something else. I will be trying it out on an e30 cab alpine white. This is the first time I am trying this out. I have been polishing the car in the past so I should notice the difference. My e21 is going into shop soon ish so once its out,I may give it the treatment. Im tempted to change colour but that would be costly.

sorry, have to disagree with you on that one mark. i've tried several clay bars and some certainly give a better finish than others and produce less marring. the fact our cars are nearly 30 means you'll notice a bigger difference with products, especially regards to polish, paint cleansers and clay bars.

older cars' paint is in worse condition, so a better product will help bring it back to life better IMO. the key is getting it up to scratch and then applying a decent sealant. decent sealants (nano sealants from gtechniq or nanolex in particular) offer insane dirt repellancy, UV block, help prevent bird shit etching etc etc compared to traditional waxes.

take your car to kelly @ kds - guarantee he could get your car looking better than it did out of the factory

I'm not suggesting that there's no difference, just that for most of us, the regular brands like Meguires etc, give a perfectly acceptable finish. The paintwork on my car is pretty flawless and I use nothing more than Autoglym. If your waxing your Zonda then yes, I might concede there's a benefit to spending silly money on products but 30 year old BMW paint was never that special to begin with. That's just my opinion though obviously and opinions are like arsoles. We've all got them.
