rubber engine mount change

hi peeps, its been a while!
i have some new engine mounts i bought a while back which i attempted to put in over the weekend but didnt get very far...
i attempted to jack up the engine from under the mounting bracket but the whole car appeared to lift, not just the engine, so i couldnt slip out the existing rubber mount out.
is there a trick to it, or some other brackets/bolts i need to loosen in order to allow the gap where the rubber mount sits to open up? it seems like it should be easy enough to do...
