Tachometer issues

Hey lads,
A few months back, on my 323i, I attempted to change my original tachometer with the one with the green stripe.. and so when removing the original I messed up and didnt check which plugs came out from which socket and now the meters both arent working when connected.
Ive checked the haynes manual and shown there, are the three main wires,
1st) black plug (live)
2nd) 2 x brown plugs (earth)
3rd) 2 x Green and white plugs (one from each long connector which attach one the left and right side of the meter)
However in my car theres a violet and white plug instead of the green and white, and there is voltage coming through it.. So annoying as I know if I had been a little wiser i would have checked and labelled each plug and socket
Any help is much appreciated, thanks
Vic
