Mirrors

I've just bought a pair of Engellman mirrors from Germany and I want to fit them in place of the standard door mounted ones. I just wondered if anyone else had fitted aftermarket mirrors and if so, how did you go about mounting them?
Would I be right in thinking that were I to cut a triangular base plate to go where the OE mirrors go, I could use the original mounting bolts to fit it before bolting on my new mirrors?
Is there a blanking panel for those people who have the early 2002 style, chrome mirrors?
Any help / advice would be much appreciated.

Do you think I'm better off mounting on the door then as opposed to where the OE ones were?
I'm also concerned as to what fittings should come with the new mirrors? Does the base plate just bolt or rivet directly to the door mate?

The first type E21 had a bracket at the inside of the door so you mounted the mirror onto the bracket.

Yes, but mine's a later car. I'm just wondering if I would be better mounting them as Jason has or on the blanking plate that replaces the later OE mirror? I'd rather not start drilling my door unless I need to.

On the plate as for a type 2 E21 is also possible offcourse but i wonder if the mirror comes in a nice position so that you can see everything right?

Mark I had to mount them on the door as the bases were to big for the normal mounting place ie they would overhang the chrone trim and also as i have the seat just above the floor I need them lower down to see anything

Can you take a couple of pics of your car but standing back from it please Jason? I want to see how they look from a distance. I'd hate to drill holes and then decide I don't like how they look.
