What gearsbox for the e21

Hi, all
I have the 316 Auto But want to change to Manual as i heard that this auto has only 3 gears explaining my rev counter going high 4000+ on the dual roads. what can be the easy option to upgrade to a 5 speed gear box, would it be a straight swap over from a e28 or e30 ? and which is a good gear box...

If you can get hold of the standard 5 speed E21 Getrag, I'd personally go for that. There is the sports box, expensive and arguably no advantages apart from shorter gearing.
Third is an E30 like I have in mine. Cheaper and plenty of them about, but you will have to make something up for the speedo.

yes cheers Arshad 76, There s an e30 breaking down the road hope its got the 5 speed box, will check 2 morr.
I will also get a spidery thingy made up and thats it??? sound too easy....
Haven't read all the tread but i hope you got the monies back on the xhaust folds and what a nice car you have... I will work towards that sortof look.

Yeah I sold the exhaust for what I bought it for in the end. You're welcome to see it and get your own idea, my friend did it, so I'm sorry I can't tell you in detail. Except it does work, I have an E30 box and a working speedo.

Arshad, any chance of me speaking to your pal and ask him how he did the speedo conversion....better still, any chance of him doing it for me if i paid him. lol

To be honest Mobster he's a hobby mechanic with his own farm and doesn't really tinker with cars as a business, just friends and family. I could ask him next time I see him though, what exactly do you want to know?
It really isn't difficult to work out I think. If you show the diagram to any engineer they can make up a spider wheel and then ask a competent mechanic to put it in the diff and attach a speedo pickup to that.

You need a gearbox that fits the M10 engine and another prop shaft. Or, I believe you can have your current prop shaft shortened to fit a 5 speed overdrive box.

I am thinking to get a car already manual and start again, it maybe easyer, but then they are hard to find a car like this condion! mmmmmmmmmm
