Thinking of putting in a bid on some seats that have black bolsters and brown cloth middle seaty type bit. As brown wouldn't go with my car at all, can I in principle dye them black with the same kind of stuff used by people to change the colour of their carpets?

I'm not sure if you can get in touch with JR Cook of this and bimmerforums. He died his carpet from beige to black and it still looks great with no fading. It's the time you brush on iirc.

I did my carpet and it's fine. I see no reason why you couldn't dye seats too.

Just had a thought, is there any chance that the dye could come off on to clothes when you sit on the seats - or are the dyes fairly permanent?

Permanent dyes are, yes. Just be sure you buy the right one. I got a gallon for fifteen quid off e-bay.

Cool, thanks for the advice. Did you get the price you wanted for your seats by the way?

fabric spray paint from duplicolor works great too! spray your seats, brush it around with a soft/medium strength brush to work it into the fabric, let it dry and you're good to go.

I used ritz fabric dye available at most grocery stores. I dyed faded tan carpet black by soaking it in a clean trash can with the dye solution for several days. The longer I let it sit the darker it got. It came out more of a black brown. Of course I had to rinse the carpet and let it dry for several days afterward. I ended up selling it to a guy with a sierra beige car with tan interior where it would look great. It didn't look as good with an anthracite interior, I found some decent stock gray carpet instead.

Mark, what did you use to dye your carpet? The duplicolor fabric dye sounds interesting.

Anyone tried autoglym?

Also does it come off on your clothes?
