You can also use 10w/40 semi-synthetic (as I do on a B23 lump) depending on the age & mileage of the engine, this was Opie Oils advice to me. 5,000 miles on, it's proved a good decision. All a 'semi-synthetic' is, is a combination of as little as 5% (and no more than 30%) hydrocracked oil. However if your engine is high mileage and original, then a 15w or even 20w/40 will be a better better bet due to wear.

Ok, can I also ask the same question for my engine?
179000 km, genuine inside except for the weber carb and handmade air filterbox (no air filter actually)
At about 100000 it started burning some oil, and I had a valves and springs replacement.
Otherwise it's totally factory, nothing else.
So what oil type should I use?

If your piston rings are original, I personally would go for a higher viscosity as above, as there is bound to be wear and therefore more chance of a thinner viscosity oil (like a 5w or 0w) pushing past the rings into the combustion chamber.
Of course, this is only my opinion and you should get the advice of someone more qualified, but going by all of the info I've had told to me over the years, that's what I'd do.

That's what the Haynes manual says - 20w/50. I might ask the classic specialist at BMW Park Lane when I get the chance.
