Intermittent Odometer and Fuel gauge reading

Hi guys,

I noticed recently that my fuel gauge has been flicking up and down over the last few weeks. But today I did 100 miles and noticed the odometer reading was the same before I set off :shock Could this be a faulty clock or bad wiring? The left side headlight can flicker on and off from time to time. The previous owner had messed around with the electrics eg cutting the electric mirrors WHY OH WHY? :hammer Your thoughts would be appreciated! Cheers Ally

its sound fuse box related, take fuses out one by one and clean then with some fine sand paper / wire wool, and clean the contacts on the fuse box.

the odometer, hmm, if your speedo works then id say the odometer is broken?

Cheers Bro I will have a look! It's typical you fix one thing and then the other thing breaks! LOL. The speedo/rev counter works and the odometer was working until I pressed the button in to reset the trip- This is when it started playing up. I have ordered a new cap btw will look forward to fit a new shiny part! I hope I ordered the right thing didn't notice the spring bit? OOPS

My odo stopped working a while back too. Was told that the cogs behind the dash can break away or crack

How can I take the odo out and check? Is there an easy way of doing this? Cheers Ally

Think theres a way to just undo the instrument cluster and pull it out, never tried it tho!. Maybe just some clips or screws under the dash. Take the cover underneath the steering wheel off and have a goose?

If you take the cover under the steering wheel away you will find one nut .. not really a nut but I don't know the exact word in english .. you will see what I mean if you see it :D (somewhere on top between alot of wires)... you unbolt that .. (the bolt where the nut fits on is fixed to the cluster itself) the only other thing you have to turn loose is the speedo cable .. (if its your first time this is a bit hard to find .. it sits at the back and in the middle of the speedo meter) .. if both are unscrewed the cluster is loose and can be taken out .. next .. you unscrew some screws at the back of the cluster and then you can take everything out seperately .. odo, speedo etc...

Thanks guys! I think I will need a haynes manual? It sounds quite involved :? Even when I do manage to take everything apart I will still be scratching my head :rev

Should hopefully become obvious when you take that panel from under the wheel off. Its only held on by screws
