Timing Chain or Timing Belt?

Hi I have a grey market 1980 323i and keep getting people telling it has a timing chain or a timing belt? which one is it cause i wanna know what to order before i take it apart.

323i is a belt just like every other m20 engine.

Thanks Murran, thats what i thought. Everyone was convinced that it was a chain cause it was '' old ''?

15x7 Riken mesh! Came with the car and surprisingly had all the center caps!

hey, nice ride. When did they start allowing the euro bumpers in the states? I had a 320is and a few others over time , but those bumpers werent allowed then. ofcourse that was 15 years ago.

For a long time to my knowledge??? I mean the car came from Germany in the 90s and its had its original ones the whole time? but they allow all sorts of stuff on cars that they used to get all pissy about, but the emmisions is whats killing me :( they won't let me register it because it will not pass emissions :wtf

All BMW's have timing chains, except M20 (and M21 diesel) and M40 engines.
