right, so lets say for arguements sake I am insane and like an uphill struggle. Im was sitting there last night and I think I may have come up with a way to make a 3.0 m20. Am I right in thinking that the 2.7 was bored out to 2.7 and the 2.8 used a stroker crank as well? say out of a 325 diesel or if your pockets are deep the shrick one.

cheers for that jason but I havent got the funds to buy an m3 engine just now. lol Actualy, what Im thinking of doing here is re-engineering my m20. I have access to machine shop and 2 good scrap yards so I will be bartering and machining this myself.
What I have in mind is increasing the stroke and boring the engine as far as is safe to do. Then I am going to machine a spacer between the head and the block to increase volume to 3.0. So you see this will no longer be an m20 but a whole new engine built by hand on a budget. so I need to know the largest crank stroke that can be fitted so I can calcul;ate how much extra volume I need to create.

Corrected my post, you need the m54 crank from a e46 330i or a e39 530
