Engine floor test?

Is it possible and are there any benefits of starting an engine up, when its out of the car?
youd need to build a secure stable frame to mount the engine on preferably with a gearbox on or design a flywheel cover....
what engine is it?
used to have these at college..... engines in a frame with castors on it that you could start etc.
