Parts list for my engine swap and a couple of Q's

So I located an injection M10 that had a rebuild a few years ago. It's come out of a 1985 E30 318i and will be going into my 1981 316 1.8 Carb to replace my almost dead lump. Myself and Murran are going to tackle it the Sunday after next so I'm hoping to get some materials together this week. Any advice on parts needed would be much appreciated;

- Service stuff (oil, air/oil filters, coolant, plugs, brake fluid? clutch fluid?)
- Fuel pump (he's gonna chuck that in)
- Materials for the fuel return line? What do I need?
- Materials for the battery relocation.. is this necessary? If so, what do I need?
- Materials for wiring up (connector blocks.. owt else?)
- Miscellaneous?

I'm also hoping to move across my alternator, radiator, water pump, clutch, rubber hoses etc. as these were all new. I'm assuming they'll all fit but since it's a later model M10 I'm not sure?

Thanks!
Jason

It probably isn't necessary, but a sump gaskets are normally under a tenner, and will make life easier if the old one gives way somewhere down the line! Talking of sumps, some people have clearance issues with the E30 sump. I had an E30 sump fitted to my E21 316 1.8 and it was fine but I have heard stories it's not. So it might just be worth swapping the sump over and sticking a new gasket in anyway.

Thermostat is another consumable I always change when swapping. I have concerns that your waterpump might be a pain to remove unless it's really really new, and could not seat too well, but I could be wrong.

I haven't see an injection M10 so I'm not sure how the battery situation will work out. If you do have to relocate source a cable from an E36 or E34 with a nice terminal box that sits in the engine bay. Feed the cable through the bulkhead grommet by the bonnet release catch and down the side of the passenger sill and into the boot where the rear seat belt reels are.

Fuel return line, use 8mm copper piping from motorfactors. It bends by hand easily. The E21 will have the catches to bolt the line up underneath. Unless you want to drop your tanks, which is a massive pain, I would get an amount of flexible fuel pipe and drop it down the side of the tank to reach the copper piping. I haven't seen an M10 injection fuel pump before though...

I'm a big fan of bullet connectors but many people don't see this as the "proper way".

Thanks for the comprehensive reply, much appreciated. :)

Stat and water pump are literally 3 months old so they should be alright but I'll keep an eye on the water pump and make sure it seals properly. Not sure I've got time to source a terminal box so might just have to run cables for the swap next week and then tidy it up when I get the chance.

How much flexi fuel pipe and copper pipe sould I be asking for? 1m of flexi and 3m of copper should be more than enough?

Yep, deffo still on for this Sunday! Whenever you want to get there mate, 9.30 sounds good but I won't hold you to it as it's a Sunday :) I might get there a bit earlier and start dismantling outside the unit haha. Really hoping to get it done in one day since she is my primary (and only) form of transport. :shock:

Going to have to confirm the above with Jim but I'm pretty sure he's cool with it. I'll PM you my mob number in a bit.

Sunday is still fine, hopefully Boyd will deliver the engine on Thursday. I'm hoping to get my spring/brake issues sorted Thursday and then spend Friday sorting out all my junk so we can find things! Need to get a new cylinder of gas in case we need to weld anything. We should be able to use a forklift to move engine in/out - easier than the scaffold bar on the ramp that Murran had to make do with when putting the engine in the Baur.

Nice one. If you want a hand tidying up just give me a shout - I finish work at 5 on weekdays. I'll give Boyd a call on my lunch today just to confirm too. Do you need me to bring anything else on Sunday other than the above materials?

Also, what beer do you drink Jim?

I have lots of stuff around that we can use, I have some battery cable, but probably not enough to reach to the boot, it'd also need some sort of terminal to go under the bonnet. The unit has lots of electrical wiring bits and bobs plus just about every tool you can imagine. Need to make sure we have a wiring diagram for an M10 e30 316i, but I suspect it'll be much the same as the 325i wiring loom which Murran and I have experience of already.

We do have a Halfrauds at the end of the road for any emergency stuff, but if you have all the oil/plugs/filters we can get it done without too much stress. Get gearbox and diff oil too, we can change them while it's up on the ramp and you won't have to do it again for a long time!

Beer - I like the cold, wet moderately alcoholic variety. Murran likes the same stuff :D

There should be one of those terminals in the E30 if they have the battery in the boot too? I'll ask Boyd.

Gearbox oil - only changed that last year so should be right I think. The diff oil definitely needs doing though.

I found some wiring diagrams for an E30 1984 318i using waybackmachine.com (great site btw if you have any useful bookmarks which are now dead);

There's also some PDF's here for a 1987 325e;

I'll have a scout around t'interweb tonight see if I can rustle anything else up. I'll print all these off at work and bring them with me on Sunday.

good idea printing the diagram off at work.... why use your paper!

only the m3 and e30 325i sport's have the battery in the boot.
chop up some decent jump leads and get a pack of big ring terminals to crimp on in the vise....

im all beered up atm got 24 cans of newcastle brown for fitting a track rod end on a renault van on saturday.
not touched them yet either as im on antibiotics for an infection in my finger! thats why im off work today, need to be in tomorrow tho, cant afford another day off!
in fact drjim, whats good for an infected finger? soaking in warm salty water?

Anything you want instead of beer? Do you smoke? (Sorry Doc.. I know I shouldn't encourage that!)

My local motor factors are ****ing useless.

Me: Do you sell 8mm fuel line?
Them: Maybe. What for?
Me: A return fuel line.
Them: Hold on. *goes away for 5 minutes*. Okay, we have 4.7mm.
Me: .... Never mind. Can I order some plugs and air/oil filters?
Them: Model?
Me: E30 318i 1985.
Them: Need the reg.
Me: Don't have it.
Them: Can't help you *click*.

:stupidme

Looking at ebay now but not sure it'll be here on time. Anyone recommend someone in or around Manc who can supply such fuel line? Do I need a minimum wall thickness or rating btw?

I believe 8mm microbore heating pipe works fine, but if Murran is back to work then he should be able to get some in time via his contacts.

Murran - do you have a yellow bit next to the nail bed like this?

Image

If so popping it is the way forward!

And there is only one antibiotic that really precludes drinking, and in most people even that doesn't make any difference. The one in question is metronidazole and it causes a disulfiram type reaction which you can google for yourselves.
