Am doing a rebuild of my 82 316 Baur - repainting, redoing the engine. The engine is currently out of the car.
Should I replace all the rubber in the front and rear suspensions.
I detected a little looseness - like a loose u-joint. I believe that there is only one u-joints in the drivetrain. Correct?
Anything else I should replace while I have my nose in there (in order to get a tighter ride)?
thanks,
Peter CS
Looseness in the suspension
Re: Looseness in the suspension
I did when I rebuilt mine, for what its worth. i replaced the rear trailing arm bushes with stock, but the rear cross member mounts and the arb bushes in the front bottom arms I cast those myself with polyuerethane. dead easy to do and really tightens the car up. I would also have a close look at the top bearing and mount on the front strut as I had to replace mine.

While the engine is out you may aswell do the steering rack bushes? Much better access with the engine out. Murran might have a homemade poly set floating about if you PM him.

Re: Looseness in the suspension
anywhere you see a rubber bush stick a big bar in and try to move it about if there is any play or the rubber looks to be dozed (cracked) replace.
replace rubber with polyurethane where possible, superflex do a pretty comprehensive range.
casting your own seems to be succesful especially the rear subframe mounts.
